Do any of our fellow owners use the valuation service of PCA??

Letter to me dated December 16, 1999 signed by Joe Hartman, Chairman of PCA
Valuation Committee, reads in part:

"Porsche Year/Model: 1988 944 Turbo S Date of
Valuation: December 1999

Average Price Valuation: $18,730 Number of Data
Points: 32

(from data sources in 14-month period to date)
Upper Price Range Limit: $24,420
(approximately 90% of all Porsche values in this category can be
expected to be below this number
the 10% above this value would be expected to be in exceedingly
good condition, or true concours.)

Lower Price Range Limit: $13,030
(approximately 90% of all Porsche values in this category can be
expected to be above this number.
Cars worth less would be in extremely poor condition.)

Average price for 12-month period between 6 and 12 months prior to
date: $19,040

Porsche Club of America believes that the above valuation represents
the fair market price of the particular model/year
described as demonstrated by the broad database, and is valid for purposes o
f insurance or insurance claims.

If you have not requested a valuation for your own car, sign on to
http://www.pca.org, go to the Valuation Page and you can obtain a similar
response. A nice service!!!

I'll look forward to any tabulation of the information you gather.

red exterior, good paint
tan leather, good shape

bone stock CA car
live in bay area, but bought it from a guy in Hermosa Beach

I took Bruce's 911 rebuild class a few years back and asked him why he listed 951s so far under actual market value. He just shrugged his shoulders and didn't seem to care. He said something like..."I'm not trying to affect the value...I couldn't care less what they are worth." I got the feeling he didn't take it too seriously, particularly for the 944/51s. If you read his letters column in Excellence, and compare it to 5 years ago, you get the sense Bruce is not "trying" as hard as he did before. Just my 2 cents. --Tom M.

Actually, if I'd known you NEED a maintenance log or complete portfolio of
repair receipts, I'd dropped the price $1500. Also, I bought it prior to
learning of Porsche list (now Rennlist), so I lacked all sorts of common
sense. I also, stupidly as it were, did not have a second mechanic's
opinion. The Mechanic that was working on the car lacked experience on
Porsche's. It was a setup. I was FRAMED! Snookered! gasp gasp....
But I ain't selling it, so don't ask.

Hi,
My name is Ryan. I sold my 1984 944 with records of all the usual maintenance done for $5,300 this past January. The car was stock. Mileage was around 103,000. The odometer didnt work however. The condition was about a 7.5/10 for the exterior and about a 8.5/10 for the interior.

Comment: I do not think that you can really put a value on these cars because
they are hard to find at any price. Also, finding qualified service pros is
becoming harder as the dealerships steer clear of these cars, and they are
becoming more rare.

I just purchased a 944S2 1989 (original in-service date = 2/90). 59xxx
miles, all original, concours winner, Ext = 10, Int = 10, 60k service
completed. All records back to the sticker. Boston, MA area. $16,000.

I believe I paid a premium for this car, as one usually does for examples in
this condition. The price was comparable to a clean E30 M3, which seems to
be a good metric.

The car was professionally appraised at $10,267 as a

The car was professionally inspected by an independent
Porsche mechanic before purchase.

- partial service history
- small crack in windshield, lower passenger side
- some "nose rash" (stone chips), otherwise body and
paint condition are excellent. No door dings
- interior is excellent, cloth "porsche fabric" seats
with no rips or tears. Three small (1/8 - 1/4") cracks
in the dash near the defrost outlets

I just purchased a 1988 - 944 Turbo S (951) in FL and drove it back to CO.
Vin: WPOAA2956JN151554
Milage: 59300
Quite original except for a chip (old on included)
Price: $13,500 (had previously turned down $13,000)
2 Owner car that has always been in FL
I would describe the car as a 8.5 - 9
Everything works and has been well maintained, 60K done at 58500. New
timing belt, water pump, clutch and all parts, battery, tires,
Original window sticker would indicate a $50,400 original price.
Drove it 2100 miles home and only thing I did was to put fuel and a quart of
oil in.
Negatives:
- Lower half repaint. Although good quality. Reason was the fist
owner, used a key to express her anger at a pending divorce.
- Oil leak in area of rear of oil pan onto the exhaust header (smoke)
- "Rich" fuel smell
- Test pipe installed, although the converter, etc are to be shipped to
me
- Cloth seats need to be cleaned
- Car had a roll bar and has plates in place. Car was raced 3 times.

Overall, I think the car is worth the price paid and probably was a "good
buy".

I appreciate you supplying the information to a source that should have this
in their posession. By the way, the owner had over 30 calls on the car.

Many little things were broken, I talked the price down from $10k. The
shop that saw the car for pre-purchase inspection said they could sell the
car for $11-$12k in the St. Louis market any day.

I did send this info, btw, via private email to Bruce Anderson on the

car and I was sold. I know i could have had a similar car ithout mods for
16k-17k but the work was already done for me and it pulled really hard. It was
setup very nicely. Also, I got plenty of goodies with it like articles, sales
literature, 450 lbs spring, slotted brand new rotors and porterfield brake pads,
rocker panels, vented nose panel and supllemental turbo manual. The final price
was 21,250 for everything . I did have to install a new windshield( $460) and a

1990 944 S2 Alpine White
-------------------

Name: John Fowler
State: NJ
Date of purchase: Sept. 1998
Private sale
Price: $9,300
1986, 951, Alpine white/burgundy, side mouldings, sun roof, factory alarm,
leather interior, standard 16" phone dials. Absolutely stock - no mods
whatsoever except for radio - was replaced in 1995 with high-end Sony
cassette receiver and matching 10 CD changer. Maintenance records wer up to
date ( timing belts, fluid adjustments etc.)
Mileage - 76,240 miles
Exterior - 8, No paint damage but a 5inch diameter "soft dent" forward of
right rear wheel well - pulled out with paintless dent repair process.
Interior - 10, absolutely perfect - couldn't believe you could keep an
interior in this good of a condition but PO was a fanatic about maintenance.

Additional info:
Car was purchased from the original owner who spared no expense in
maintaining the vehicle - he truly loved this car. His reason for selling
was he became a family man and didn't really have time to keep up with it
and had future plans of acquiring a Boxster. All maintenance was done by
Porsche at Schnieder-Nelson Porsche in Long Branch, NJ. Who provided me with
a computer printout of everything (in detail) done to this car. The PO
priced the car according to resale value as per Keely Blue Book retail which
I considered to be very underpriced - which is why I offered him full price
and was willing to pay more, if necessary. After I wrote him a check for
the car, he was offered as high as $13,000 for the car. I felt I got a very
good deal -real bargain.

No records but the car is all original and was obviously well maintained
with no Mickey Mouse repairs. I drove the car daily for the summer of 1999
and put on 8,000 miles and had to replace the starter, and had repeated
failures of the a/c tensioner due to a broken a/c compressor mounting lug in
the rear. A check of the timing/balance belts showed everything was in
excellent condition and had very little dust/smut in there so I feel that
the belts were done recently. I plan to replace those this spring and do a
complete tune up before I drive it another season. All in all this has been
an excellent purchase.

Track or upgraded cars have been bringing a premium, but they don't recover
the investment amounts. Super clean, or as delivered cars with very low
miles demand a premium but these are few and far between. As for the
Escort, Firehawk, and the 86 951 CS models they have been around $50K for
10 years now and the price really has not changed over time.

Now per your query,

1986 951 dealer purchase in 88 for $17K 10-10 loaded (my garage queen with
41K miles) bone stock
1986 951 private purchase in 98 for $1.7K 5-3 (140K, track car project)
mild upgrades and in a bazillion pieces.
1986 951 Euro, private purchase in 99 for $12K 4-9 (77K, track/street car)
2.8 Powerhaus Conversion, $25K in upgrades less than 18 months and 5K miles

Yep, I do have a stinking car lot and I'm depressed about the 86 pricing,
but then again I've been in a buying mode and this is good. (collecting my
toys)

Good luck and I'll be interested in seeing your results

$15,000. My car was originally delivered to the Porsche dealer on 2
October, 1988 in Dublin, Ohio. It was sold by that dealership on 14
January, 1989 to the first owner. The original window sticker states that
this car came with the special 250HP package, etc., and it is guards red
with linen (light grey) interior.

I am glad you are doing this survey because Bruce Anderson's market value
prices and comments in "Excellence" magazine always made me feel a bit
embarrassed, as though I paid too much for the car.

Perhaps I did, but it's the best $15,000 car out there, in my opinion.

My car is stock, other than the Fabcar control arms, lightened flywheel and
Sachs competition clutch. What sold me on this particular car was the
exceptional repair and maintenance documentation that accompanied it. The
two prior owners saved all their receipts, showing over $20,000 worth of
maintenance since new. This corresponded well with the car's appearance.
The only drawback was that the front half of the car had been repainted.
However, there was no accident damage and the compression was excellent,
etc. I have been very happy with it.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

I purchased a 1989 Turbo for $15k in 10/99. Car had exactly 58k miles when
purchased. The car was purchased in North Augusta, South Carolina. On a scale
from 1 to 10, the car was a 9. The car has paint chips on front facia. Also, I
purchased a set of tires to get in through Md inspection (the car needed two
rear tires). I looked at many 89 944 Turbos, this was the cheapest and the
cleanest. My car had two previous owners.

I'll give you two data points (well actually 3)
Purchased in late 97 - 86 na 109k miles - broken clutch center, one balance
shaft 180 degrees out, cheap tires, tired original konis but cosmetically
very nice. - $3500

Sold in late 88 for $6500 (broke even on parts!)

Purchased in late 88 - 86 turbo. 56k miles, came with records. Previous
owner babied the car - the one fault I found was that the boost was limited
to 1.2 bar (safety mode) the owner thought that that was the factory limit.
Obviously never driven hard! Cosmetically perfect except for a few paint
chips. Cheap worn tires. Paid $9500.

Nick Ferrala, Waterville, Maine

Private Sale through my mechanic (Porsche specialist), who personally owned the car (in Bangor, Maine)
Purchased for $8000 (asking was $8500)

1986 951, entirely stock

118,000 miles, interior condition 9, exterior 6 (see below)

Overall, the exterior was excellent structurally, but paint was terrible as it was done unprofessionally and was cracking.

Given the condition of the paint, I feel that I paid a premium, but I did so based on the reputation of the mechanic/seller, a fair amount of (recent) records and on the assurance from this mechanic that the car was mechanically very sound (which has proven largely to be true). Hey, he was the guy that I would take a 951 to have it checked out, so I had to trust him, right?

Through an incredible deal, I had the exterior refinished and repainted...full breakdown of doors, hood, bumpers, mirrors, etc., for about $2000. An additional $500 was spent on seals, badges, emblems, wheel caps, and windshield. These were all considered and planned-for before the purchase. So, final price was $10,500 for a car that could win Concourse if I were to put the elbow grease into the wax and shine job.

I hope this helps.

Here is my 951 purchase info:

1987 951, 120K miles, 3rd owner, bought in Houston, TX 12/21/96 for $8250;
car needed immediate front brakes and new tires all around, seller was
asking $9000, and the car was completely stock. It came with a stack of
records about two inches tall and all the correct manuals. Cosmetically
very good, two small dash cracks and one seam tear on passenger seat.
Interior otherwise perfect, everything worked. The car also came with a
recently installed new clutch and a brand new (>$2000) aircon system with
true 134A Sanden rotary compressor, etc. An incredibly cheap way to go 170
mph for under $10K.

In June 1999, I purchased a 1993 Black/Tan 968 M030 for $24,500 from a
private party. The car had 40,000 miles on it.
I would rate both the interior and exterior a 9.5. Other than a few stone
chips on the front, the exterior is flawless. The only interior flaw was a
broken glove box catch. The 968 came with full service records from Beverly
Hills Porsche where it was maintained and also purchased new from. The tech
that did the pre-purchase inspection said, "I would never find a better
example of the 968 than this car."

Many of my friends and co-workers that are not that familiar with Porsches
have asked if it brand new. IT LOOKS THAT GOOD!!!

This car was really bought to be used for a track car, so the cometics were
not as important as the mech shape. Of course, after driving it for a bit,
I want to make it nice enough to use as a daily car/track car... go

I am guessing I will be putting $1000 in the interior, $3000 in the exterior
and $2000 in the mechanicals to get it where I want the car at.

Mileage at my purchase @ 78k date: 7/98 now have 87k
Condition: Exterior Indischrot Red- repainted, according to my brothers friend who has a shop in Rhode Island, I have an excellent job worth at least $4000.00
So good in fact that my brother who this spring got a 82 911SC looks at my car with a fine tooth comb every time he sees it and say's "I wish I knew who painted this ",I do have chips in the front, I guess due to normal use. I detest bras, even on women I guess. The interior is a 9, I am just starting to experience cracks on my dash. None are visible sitting in the car, the most severe is about 4 inches to the left of the instrument cluster, with a couple small one's happening at the defroster outlets.
Seat's are stunning, I have seen my share of "old" 944's and I have yet to see any seat as well preserved as mine. You should have heard me swear when I sat in the seat with a pencil in my back pocket...it's hardly noticeable( the puncture) :-)

obvious wear. Complete with porsche air compressor, owners manual, toolkit,

I finally got my Excellence in the mail today. The article shows the 944
turbos going down in value since last year. Bruce is a 911 guy, and I just
don't think he is paying much attention to the 944 prices or his 944
articles. In the August '99 issue, the Readers' Sales Report shows 2 951
selling at well above Bruce's numbers and in each instance Bruce says that
the sales may "represent an upward trend in prices for 944 turbos." I
think in reality the sales represent what the values have been for some
time, and Bruce was just starting to notice. Well, he seems to have
forgetten, because he continues to show them undervalued and declining. In
this months article, there is one sale, also well above Bruce's numbers.
In fact, I flipped through the last year's worth of the magazine, and I
only found one car selling in Bruce's range. Bruces numbers are also
remarkably close to Kelley Blue Book retail values, which really makes me
wonder how he is making those editorial deadlines. Unless he starts trying
a little harder, I think we may need to accept that his values are just not
very accurate. If you compile a list, maybe you should send it to Bruce
and Excellence. If Bruce doesn't care, maybe the magazine will.

OK, This is my story.

I purchased my 89 951 with 47,500 miles on it for $13,000. The PO lived in
Chicago and kept the car here in Tucson, AZ at his second home for most of
the time. I purchased the car 3/20/97.

The following maintenance was done immediately:
New motor mounts, new cam and balance belts, new in dash AC control unit,
new hood shocks, new high pressure hose on the AC, alignment, two new front
tires, fixed rear wiper connection, replaced clock bulb, replaced leaking
heater valve, and some general maintenance. This totaled about $2000 in
parts and labor.

The paint on the front of the car, hood and roofline was getting slightly
faded. I had this perfectly colormatched for $1,500. The car looked perfect
and ran perfect after all this.

So, I would have paid $17,000 for my car after the needed maintenance was
completed. But you need to understand the car was now PERFECT!

Since this, I have had the wheels polished, and stereo work completed. The
engine and clutch now has many upgrades and is putting down 335hp and 345tq
at the wheels on a dynojet. The parts cost about $6,500 plus labor. If you
don't include typical maintenance costs, I have about $20,000 into my car.

I would not sell it for less than $19,000.

Purchased in Sept 99.

1988 944 Turbo S. Siberrosa on burgundy cloth. All standard turbo S
options No air bags in Canada.
101,000 Kms (about 62K miles)
Paid $18,000 CDN dollars (around $12.5K US) in Montreal, Canada. Montreal
is a VERY inexpensive place to buy used cars. Typically the cost of the car
in Montreal [CDN dollars] will be the same as the cost in the US [US
dollars].

Bought via Private sale (albeit from the owner of a specialized German Auto
centre).
Completely stock and unmodified. 50% of all service records (just last 5
years). Never winter driven.
Mechanically a 9 (recent clutch, brakes, timing belt/pump, starter).
Minor mechanical shortcomings (sloppy shifter (pin), slightly leaking power
steering fluid (from reservoir of course)
Needs new tires.
Cosmetically a 7, decent original paint. Requires front nose repaint (rock
chips). Crack in windshield.
Interior a 9, very clean interior. Small tear in drivers seat backrest,
worn leather shift boot.

Overall a solid turbo S, with no mechanical problems but not a concourse
car.
Which is OK, I plan to race it like crazy!

expected for a vehicle of this age and
mileage.

By the way, the sale date was January of 1999.

Hi,

I bought my 82 924 3 years ago for 1995.00USD. It was a good runner, just
needed lots of love and a new interior. If I were to sell it today I would
try real hard to get 2500-3000 because of the restoration and performance
enhancements.

Car is the wifes & it has Automatic tranny, she is too short to drive a stick, seats won't go forward enough to get the clutch down. We paid more than book value because we had a hard time finding an Automatic worth buying. My 944 & 924 have been around way too long to be of intrest to your survey.

Optional Fuchs, leather seats, air-con, sunroof, cruise, immaculately
maintained, gold-thread on floor-mats were still shiny.

I'd say I got one hell of a deal. In the one year (+2-months) I've owned
it, I've had no unexpected failures. Normal wear & tear maintenance for the
type of use (4-6 track sessions/year). Hope this helps your cause. - danno

You could tell me that my 89' 951 is only worth $3000. Talk is cheap, but
don't expect me to turn over the keys for less than $18,000..... Prices
may vary and no one says you have to sell these engineering masterpieces
for less than you want to let it go for... my 2 cents...

I bought my 85.5 944 in June of '98 for $4900. It had 145,000 miles, but was easily an 8 both mechanically and cosmetically.
