Reason was the fist owner, used a key to express her anger at a pending divorce. - Oil leak in area of rear of oil pan onto the exhaust header (smoke) - "Rich" fuel smell - Test pipe installed, although the converter, etc are to be shipped to me - Cloth seats need to be cleaned - Car had a roll bar and has plates in place. My car was originally delivered to the Porsche dealer on 2 October, 1988 in Dublin, Ohio. It was sold by that dealership on 14 January, 1989 to the first owner. The original window sticker states that this car came with the special 250HP package, etc., and it is guards red with linen (light grey) interior. I am glad you are doing this survey because Bruce Anderson's market value prices and comments in "Excellence" magazine always made me feel a bit embarrassed, as though I paid too much for the car. Perhaps I did, but it's the best $15,000 car out there, in my opinion. My car is stock, other than the Fabcar control arms, lightened flywheel and Sachs competition clutch. What sold me on this particular car was the exceptional repair and maintenance documentation that accompanied it. The two prior owners saved all their receipts, showing over $20,000 worth of maintenance since new. This corresponded well with the car's appearance. The only drawback was that the front half of the car had been repainted. However, there was no accident damage and the compression was excellent, etc. I have been very happy with it. There just aren't too many of these on the road. --------------- I'll give you two data points (well actually 3) Purchased in late 97 - 86 na 109k miles - broken clutch center, one balance shaft 180 degrees out, cheap tires, tired original konis but cosmetically very nice. - $3500 Sold in late 88 for $6500 (broke even on parts!) Purchased in late 88 - 86 turbo. 56k miles, came with records. Previous owner babied the car - the one fault I found was that the boost was limited to 1.2 bar (safety mode) the owner thought that that was the factory limit. Obviously never driven hard! Cosmetically perfect except for a few paint chips. Cheap worn tires. Paid $9500. Chris White ----------------- Nick Ferrala, Waterville, Maine Private Sale through my mechanic (Porsche specialist), who personally owned the car (in Bangor, Maine) Purchased for $8000 (asking was $8500) 1986 951, entirely stock 118,000 miles, interior condition 9, exterior 6 (see below) Overall, the exterior was excellent structurally, but paint was terrible as it was done unprofessionally and was cracking. Given the condition of the paint, I feel that I paid a premium, but I did so based on the reputation of the mechanic/seller, a fair amount of (recent) records and on the assurance from this mechanic that the car was mechanically very sound (which has proven largely to be true). Hey, he was the guy that I would take a 951 to have it checked out, so I had to trust him, right? Through an incredible deal, I had the exterior refinished and repainted...full breakdown of doors, hood, bumpers, mirrors, etc., for about $2000. An additional $500 was spent on seals, badges, emblems, wheel caps, and windshield. These were all considered and planned-for before the purchase. So, final price was $10,500 for a car that could win Concourse if I were to put the elbow grease into the wax and shine job. I hope this helps. ------------ Mike Lohss Washington Private sale $20,500 1990 944 S2 Cabriolet - White/Black Stock Mileage: 27,000 Condition: 7 The gar had been salvaged in 1991, and has the front clip of another car. Hope this help --------------- Here is my 951 purchase info: 1987 951, 120K miles, 3rd owner, bought in Houston, TX 12/21/96 for $8250; car needed immediate front brakes and new tires all around, seller was asking $9000, and the car was completely stock. It came with a stack of records about two inches tall and all the correct manuals. Cosmetically very good, two small dash cracks and one seam tear on passenger seat. Interior otherwise perfect, everything worked. The car also came with a recently installed new clutch and a brand new (>$2000) aircon system with true 134A Sanden rotary compressor, etc. An incredibly cheap way to go 170 mph for under $10K. -Clark A. --------------- OK, here's my story: Vehicle was purchased for $5000.00 in the first week of June, 1999 1984 944 103K New "Sobel Metallic" (LY8V) paint Brown Leather interior Fuchs 15" with 215/60 H rated tires. Bruce is a 911 guy, and I just don't think he is paying much attention to the 944 prices or his 944 articles. In the August '99 issue, the Readers' Sales Report shows 2 951 selling at well above Bruce's numbers and in each instance Bruce says that the sales may "represent an upward trend in prices for 944 turbos." I think in reality the sales represent what the values have been for some time, and Bruce was just starting to notice. Well, he seems to have forgetten, because he continues to show them undervalued and declining. In this months article, there is one sale, also well above Bruce's numbers. In fact, I flipped through the last year's worth of the magazine, and I only found one car selling in Bruce's range. Bruces numbers are also remarkably close to Kelley Blue Book retail values, which really makes me wonder how he is making those editorial deadlines. Unless he starts trying a little harder, I think we may need to accept that his values are just not very accurate. If you compile a list, maybe you should send it to Bruce and Excellence. If Bruce doesn't care, maybe the magazine will. ------------------- I have 3 private sales/purchases in southern california in the last 2 years for your survey. Bought '83 944 for $3,300. I purchased my 89 951 with 47,500 miles on it for $13,000. The PO lived in Chicago and kept the car here in Tucson, AZ at his second home for most of the time. I purchased the car 3/20/97. The following maintenance was done immediately: New motor mounts, new cam and balance belts, new in dash AC control unit, new hood shocks, new high pressure hose on the AC, alignment, two new front tires, fixed rear wiper connection, replaced clock bulb, replaced leaking heater valve, and some general maintenance. This totaled about $2000 in parts and labor. The paint on the front of the car, hood and roofline was getting slightly faded. I had this perfectly colormatched for $1,500. The car looked perfect and ran perfect after all this. So, I would have paid $17,000 for my car after the needed maintenance was completed. But you need to understand the car was now PERFECT! Since this, I have had the wheels polished, and stereo work completed. The engine and clutch now has many upgrades and is putting down 335hp and 345tq at the wheels on a dynojet. The parts cost about $6,500 plus labor. If you don't include typical maintenance costs, I have about $20,000 into my car. I would not sell it for less than $19,000.
