2020 Porsche 911 Carrera has no Shortage of Power and Style

Porsche expands 911 range with the introduction of the Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet. The new 911 Carrera is quite impressive for a base model.

Sweet and simple sportscar

Porsche unveiled the new entry-level 911 a couple of weeks ago. The world's most iconic sportscar nameplate will be available as only a 'Carrera' without any other affixes. But don't think for a moment that buying a base-spec 911 Carrera signals a significant compromise of any kind.

Stellar value on offer

Available in both fixed-roof coupe and folding soft-top cabriolet, these new Carreras lower the price entry-point for Porsche 911 ownership. For $98 750 you can the new 911 Carrera coupe, compared to $114 650 for a Carrera S. The savings with a cabriolet is in similar proportion: $111,550 gets you a Carrera soft-top, compared to the Carrera S variant which will cost quite a bit more, at $134,750.

Looks the same, but a bit less potent

So how did Porsche manage to save production costs and pass on that discount to customers with this new 911 Carrera? There are compromises to the 992 platform with the Carrera as compared to higher trim levels. The most significant is the engine design, with the Carrera being Porsche's most modestly powered 911.

Slightly less power, but certainly not slow

Below the new 911 Carrera's rear deck area is a slightly detuned version of Porsche's 3-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine. It boasts 379hp, which is less than the Carrera S (443hp), but the influence on actual acceleration appears marginal. The new base-spec Carrera will run 0-60mph in four seconds, and if you equip it with the optional Sport Chrono package, it goes even quicker, at only 3.8 seconds.

Ergonomically perfect driving environment

The 911 Carrera cabin is certainly not what you would expect to find in a base specification car. Information is serviced via a 10.9-inch screen and the materials are all premium. Build quality remains redoubtable and the driving position is classic 911 - which means it is perfect.

Looks good, even better to touch

Other brands might use plastic trim pretending to be metal, but in a Porsche, what you touch is real. Not those metal dials with knurling, not the kind of finishing you can accomplish with imitation of plastic.

Keeping it classic with analogue touches

Although instrumentation digitization is a massive trend, Porsche has resisted. Therefore, even its 911 Carrera still retains a semblance of analog heritage, with a physical needle spinning around the tachometer.

Tweaking the package a touch

If you wish to dress your 911 Carrera up a touch, there are some 'S' options. You can edge-up wheel size to 21-inches and hide ceramic brakes behind those bigger hoops. Dynamically, Porsche has equipped the new 911 Carrera with standard fitment active suspension management and adaptive dampers as well.
