Exploding Values

Even before the semiconductor chip shortage and various other supply chain issues caused the used vehicle market to explode to new record highs, Porsche vehicles were already steadily gaining in value. That effect only amplified things further, particularly when inflation is factored in. Jalopnik recently put 911 pricing info into graph form, giving us a quick and startling way to see just how much Porsche prices have exploded over the years.

Most Expensive?

The latest version of the 911 - the 992 - made a lot of noise when it launched for a number of reasons, one of which is its inflated price tag. For 2022, the cheapest 911 now costs over $100k for the very first time and a full $2k more than it did in 2021. However, when adjusted for inflation, it actually isn't the most expensive 911 of all time.

Least and Most

With inflation factored in, the cheapest 911 ever sold was the 1967 model, which carried an MSRP of $5,990, or $47,836 in today's money. The most expensive model, on the other hand, was actually the 1991 911, which started out at $60,700, or $120,340 when adjusted for inflation.

Six Figure Cars

There are multiple model years of the 911 that cost over $100k when inflation is factored in, in fact. Those include not only the 1991 model, but also the 1989, 1995, and 1998 911s, which all broke the six-figure mark. After that latter year, however, things settled down in the $90k range until the 2022 model year.

Reasonably Priced

In its early days, the 911 was very reasonably priced, with values hovering in the $40-$60k range in today's money until the later 1970s, when things began to creep upward. It's interesting to imagine what the world would be like today if the 911 still sold for this kind of money, considering how many people are willing to shell out $50k+ for a boring crossover.

Not Linear

Another surprising revelation from this little exercise is the fact that 911 values haven't just steadily increased over the years. At times, prices made big jumps, while other times saw prices decline and then move back up steadily. It's not quite as linear as one might assume, that's for sure.

Perspective

Interestingly, 911 pricing hit its peak right around the same time when Porsche was launching its liquid-cooled flat-six to replace the outgoing air-cooled engines, so perhaps that had something to do with the record pricing. Regardless, this information is truly fascinating, and it makes us appreciate the 2022 model's six-figure price tag for what it actually is.
