Standing Out

With the return of the Porsche 935, we're seeing all sorts of tributes to the legendary racer popping up. One of the coolest comes to us in the form of the Mecum Auctions 2019 Monterey sale, where a number of notable vintage 935s are set to cross the block. And this '89 Long Windshield model might be be the coolest of the bunch.

Shining Example

Not only is this 935 one of just four produced in long windshield configuration, it also has a mere 14,778 miles showing on the odometer (23,662 kilometers). And it's a shining example of a pretty wild time in the automotive world.

Pushing the Envelope

This 935 was the culmination of the purpose-built competition version that dominated FIA Group 5 and IMSA GTP racing. Which is no surprise considering how it truly pushed the envelope of what was possible in the late '80s.

Light and Sleek

The body panels of the 935 are made from the same carbon Kevlar construction as the Le Mans-winning 935 K3. And of course, that wild bodywork and long windshield design were meant to harness the air and produce as much downforce as humanly possible.

Dial of Death

Notable features on the inside include competition Lollipop bucket seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the dashboard-mounted "dial of death" - a knob used to adjust, on-demand, the boost control of the turbochargers.

Proper Powerhouse

Back in 1989, the 935's 3.3-liter twin-turbo flat-six was an absolute powerhouse, producing a stout 450 hp and propelling the car to 60 mph in just 4.2-seconds, as well as a top speed of 183.3 mph.

Still Impressive

Those numbers are still pretty impressive today, a full 30 years later. Which tells you everything you need to know about how its performance was perceived back in 1989.

Fast Sitting Still

This particular 935 shines on the outside as well, with Guards Red paintwork, multi-color stripes, and BBS three-piece racing wheels with "turbo-fan" covers.

Stop and Go

The suspension of the 935 was equally as impressive as what powered it, with goodies including Bilstein shocks, H&R springs and sway bars, and the same 4-piston brake setup as the 930 Turbo.

Rare, Beautiful, Sinister

Equally rare, beautiful, and sinister, this '89 935 is easily one of the best cars Porsche has ever produced. It was a pinnacle of engineering when it came along, and could still hold its own on a track today. And that alone makes it well worth a spot in any Porsche fanatic's garage.
