The 992-Gen 911 GT3 Could Be The Last of Its Kind

While we celebrate how great the 992 GT3 is, we're also worried it may not make it to another generation.

Dying Breed?

Porsche and car fans in general have a lot to be excited about when it comes to the all-new 992 911 GT3. After all, who doesn't love a pure driver's car, one that's naturally-aspirated with a screaming flat-six powerplant and available with a manual transmission? With each passing generation of the GT3, we often wonder if it will be the last of its breed, however, and this time, that certainly looks more possible than ever.

Changing Times

As singer/songwriter Bob Dylan once crooned, the times, they are a changin'. Even Porsche, a brand that earned its reputation by building the very best gas-powered sports cars on the planet, is now focused on making electric vehicles and developing synthetic, clean-burning fuel

Inevitable Change

Meanwhile, ICE-powered vehicles are making do with smaller displacement engines and turbochargers, and that includes the base 992 911. Thus, the 992 911 GT3 certainly looks like a proper holdout from the past, with its N/A 4.0-liter flat-six and row-your-own gearbox, especially when Porsche has already admitted that it will eventually be forced to electrify the 911.

Electrification Strategy

It's expected that by 2024, Porsche will at the very least have a hybrid 911 in its lineup. This will be a good thing for those that appreciate performance over purity, as we've seen just how well electric motors can compliment gas engines in various hypercars to date. However, that won't appease those of us that enjoy a pure, old-school driving experience.

Change on the Horizon

It doesn't hurt that Porsche did a fantastic job with the all-electric Taycan, proving that it knows what it's doing with this sort of thing. But as various countries and a couple of U.S. states have already pledged to ban the sale of new ICE-powered vehicles in the coming years, we can't help but wonder if the 991 911 GT3 will be the last one Porsche bothers to produce.

Crystal Ball

Going by its past patterns, Porsche would theoretically introduce the 992 911's successor in roughly seven years. When that time comes, will it be able to make a business case for yet another naturally-aspirated, manual transmission-equipped GT3? Only time will tell, but right now, it doesn't seem terribly likely.

Instant Collectible

Though some might welcome an electrified GT3 and the added performance benefits that might bring, it's a certainty that the last N/A car will instantly become a hot collectible. And if that isn't reason enough to go out and buy one now, we don't know what is.
