Best of the Best

Porsche made a name for itself on the backs of lightweight, air-cooled sports cars. And even though the era of air-cooled Porsches is long gone, we celebrate them today perhaps even more than we did back then. Thus, it's worth looking back at what Porsche considers its finest air-cooled creations, with none other than legendary racer Patrick Long running point.

804 Formula 1 Race Car

With legendary driver Dan Gurney behind the wheel, the 804 Formula 1 proved that Porsche could win in Formula One. Packing an 8-cylinder powerplant, Gurney claimed victory at the 1962 "French Grand Prix" in Rouen. A week later, he led the entire race on the way to his second win at Solitude circuit near Stuttgart.

908/3 Spyder

The Porsche 908/3 Spyder's eight-cylinder horizontally opposed engine came about after countless hours of track testing. Couple that highly developed mill with a super lightweight 1,201-pound machine, and you've got a recipe for motorsports success. And it was, winning three of the four races the factory team competed in.

917 LH Long Tail

The Porsche 917 LH (long tail) features one of the most recognizable and beloved shapes in motorsports history. But it also packs one heck of an air-cooled punch in the form of a 4.9-liter, 600 hp, horizontally opposed engine. That duo proved so deadly that the 917 LH went on to record the fastest lap ever at Le Mans in 1970. And later, Porsche's first overall victory at the historic race.

356 B GS Carrera GT

The 356 is an iconic car in its own right, given the fact that it was Porsche's first road car. But the 356 B GS Carrera GT took things to an entirely new level thanks to what essentially amounts to a racing engine being transplanted directly into a road-going car. Couple that with goodies like aluminum body parts and optimized brake cooling, and you've got one seriously entertaining ride.

993 Turbo S 3.6

The newest member of our group, the Porsche 993 Turbo S 3.6, might seem like a bit of a surprise. But it is historically notable for marking the final chapter of Porsche's air-cooled era. But even today, its specs are no less impressive. Packing a 450 hp turbocharged punch, the 993 Turbo accelerates from 0-62 in just 4.5-seconds.
