Rare Opportunity

In the history of Porsche, there are plenty of rare and highly coveted models. That includes the 924 Carrera GTR, a racing homologation that folks still go bonkers over today, despite the disdain that many Porsche fans have for the base model. Since only 17 of these cars were ever built, you almost never see one up for sale. But if you've got the means, you can buy one right now from North Houston Porsche

Going Ham

Back in 1981, Porsche wanted to go racing in Group 4 at Le Mans. To satisfy homologation rules, they needed to sell a certain number of road-legal versions. Thus, Porsche built 406 examples of the 924 Carrera GT. Most of them were GTS models, but Porsche also doubled down with the hardcore GTR variant.

Racer for the Street

Nine of the 17 GTRs produced actually raced or qualified at Le Mans. Which means that they're, well, pretty hardcore. Porsche started by stripping everything race cars don't need from the 924, which resulted in a svelte curb weight of just 2,050 pounds.

Never Raced

Surprisingly, this particular GTR was never raced, either in Le Mans or anywhere else. It's also one of just two cars delivered to Japan when it was new, later brought into the country in 1981 by Porsche importer Garage Italya. In 1983, after being stored for 2 years, it was purchased by a Japanese businessman and classic car enthusiast who wanted to add it to his private collection.

Jewel in the Crown

Amazingly, this car also has just 71 miles (115 kilometers) showing on the odometer, so it's barely been driven at all. It remains in stellar condition as a result, a true jewel among an already rare model. Given its history, condition, and rarity, the $925k asking price actually seems reasonable.

Building a Race Car

Building upon the GTS, Porsche first tossed a larger intercooler into the GTR for track use. They then installed a full roll cage, adjustable suspension, and four-piston brake calipers from the 935. The 2.0-liter engine was also highly modified from its standard 924 configuration, as you might imagine.

Impressive Performance

In the GTR form, the 2.0 produced a healthy 375 hp and 299 lb-ft of torque, which was quite impressive at the time. And coupled with the car's light weight, it resulted in impressive performance as well. The GTR did 0-60 4.7-seconds and reached a top speed of 180 miles per hour.

Winning Car

As you might imagine, the GTR went on to enjoy some pretty impressive results at Le Mans. In 1980, Porsche entered three 924 GTRs at the legendary endurance race. They scored a 6th, 12th and 13th overall finish. And two years later, Porsche went on to achieve a class win in 1982.

Worth It?

A true slice of Porsche racing history, it's no wonder that the GTR is so coveted, even today. Whether or not they're worth nearly a million dollars, well, we can't say. But you can bet we'll be keeping our eyes peeled on these special machines when they do hit the market moving forward!
