Changing the oil is an important part of maintaining any car and is something every car owner should learn. However, with the Porsche 993, changing the oil isn't as simple as it would be for any other car since there are two plugs to drain from and two oil filters to change. Following this how-to will help make it a little easier.

Materials Needed

  • 11 quarts of motor oil
  • (Up to '95) 2 seal washers: Part #900 123 118 30
  • (After '95) 1 of the above seal washers and 1 part #900 123 095 30
  • O-Ring: Part #999 701 269 40
  • 1 small and 1 large oil filter
  • Form-a-funnel
  • Oil filter wrench w/ extension
  • Torque wrench
  • 15mm 6 point socket
  • 15mm box end wrench
  • Ratchet w/ 10 and 13mm sockets
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Jack and jack stands

Before you start, run the engine for 5-10 minutes, long enough for the oil to warm up.

Step 1 – Raise the car

Raise the car, set it on four jack stands, then remove the right rear wheel.

Step 2 – Get access to the drain plugs

Remove the rear fender liner by unscrewing 4 Philips screws. Remove the 10mm bolts under the right wheel well panel, then remove the panel. Next, remove the engine and transmission undertrays which are held up by DZUS-type screws which require a quarter turn to release. With all of that out of the way, you should now see two drain plugs. One underneath the engine and one inside the wheel well connected to the oil tank.

Step 3 – Drain oil and replace filters

Place a large oil pan under the oil tank drain plug. Unbolt the plug and let the oil drain. Replace the seal washer and O-ring on the drain plug, and torque the plug to 40 ft-lbs. Remove the oil tank filter from the wheel well. Make sure the old gasket isn't stuck inside the engine. Grease the gasket on the new filter with engine oil, then screw in the filter by hand.

Move the pan underneath the engine drain plug and unbolt the plug to let the oil drain. Unstrap and remove the rubber ventilation hose to access the second oil filter. Replace it the same way you replaced the first, removing the old gasket, greasing the new gasket with oil, and tightening the filter by hand.

When finished changing the second oil filter, return the following components then lower the vehicle:

  • Rubber ventilation hose
  • Engine and transmission undertrays
  • Wheel well panel
  • Rear fender liner

Pro Tip

To reduce the mess, use a form-a-funnel which can be folded into any shape to direct the flow of oil.

Step 4 – Add new oil

Pour in six quarts of oil at first. Start the engine and wait for the oil gauge to adjust. Then, slowly pour in three more quarts so the tank doesn't back up. Keep checking the oil gauge and adding more oil until the gauge indicates that it's full.
