Porsche 993: Regretful Modifications

Here are a few 993 modifications that land in the "regretful" category.

By Nick Vaughn - May 6, 2015

This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).

Modifications are generally considered to be a positive idea on most cars. In most situations, they are going to help make a performance upgrade or make the car handle better, and sometimes they can make the car more comfortable. Then there are situations where the modification only looks good in the eyes of the person who paid for the upgrade. This article shows a few modifications that have been regretful to fellow Porsche 993 enthusiasts.

Massive Aftermarket Wing

Many would say that this type of wing is unnecessary. Is your 993 really producing enough power that it is essential to install this type of wing? Do you really need that much downforce? The thoughts tend to turn to no. In the forum enthusiasts' eyes, this 993 mod lands in the regretful category.

Bad Exterior/Interior Color Combinations

The red exterior paint looks great, but that green interior can't be a factory install, can it? We don't see anyone at Porsche saying, "this paint scheme will be a massive hit." Custom paint jobs are great, and there are a lot of different types; however, if your Porsche can talk, it will scream "don't do it." In this case, it's best to keep it simple with colors that compliment each other well.

Non-Paint Exteriors

Outfitting a 993 with an exterior finish that isn't traditional paint is really a hit or miss modification. For example, there isn't much logic involved when putting velvet on the exterior of a car. It simply isn't practical in any way, unless you never plan to drive the car anywhere. Other than velvet wrapping, some Porsches have actually been covered with plush material and what seem to be gold plates. Possibly inspired by looks from the film Austin Powers in Goldmember, these mods aren't likely to move out of the 'regretful mod' category anytime soon.

There are many other examples out there of modifications to Porsches that just aren't right. Now it's time for you to join in the conversation. Do you have any examples, body, engine or otherwise, that you would like to share with the rest of us? Now's your chance. What have you found that's regretful?
