Porsche 993: Why is My Key Fob Not Working?

If the key fob to your Porsche 993 stops working, here's what you can do to repair it.

This article applies to the Porsche 993 (1993-1998).

You've pressed the button on your remote fob and checked that you are within close enough proximity to detect a signal, but your vehicle still won't unlock. The problem could be as simple as a dead battery. Just as a vehicle needs power to operate, so does your key fob. If the problem is more than a dead battery, you may need to open the key fob and troubleshoot the internal parts for damage. Don't worry; this article explains what to look out for and how to fix it. Here are a few simple things you can do to troubleshoot a malfunctioning key fob.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Replacement battery
  • Porsche 993 key blank and an electronic key head

Step 1 – Open the door using the key

If you have not used the remote key fob in some time, say a week or more, you may need to open the door with the key. Doing so will reactivate the fob and allow for future (and immediate) use. Once the door is unlocked, the key fob should work properly. Don't panic if the vehicle alarm sounds. Simply press "unlock" and insert the key into the ignition.

If the key fob still does not work, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 – Check the battery

It might be dead.

The remote keyless fob that you use to control and secure access to your Porsche 993 works by battery. As you engage the fob, the battery loses strength until it eventually dies. Replacing the battery is easy, and the cost for a replacement is nominal.

  • Snap the key fob open, according to the manufacturer's directions.
  • Using a flat head screwdriver, remove the motherboard, which shouldn't require force (just a quick flick of the wrist using the flat head screwdriver to gently pry out the motherboard).
  • Locate the battery by flipping the motherboard over. Be careful not to damage the micro chips, as they control the motherboard.
  • Remove the old battery and replace it with a new one.
  • Re-attach the motherboard and close the key fob.

Pro Tip

The key fob is easy to take apart, so take your time and mind the micro chips in the motherboard as you work.

Step 3 – Purchase a replacement(s)

Your key fob might need to be reprogrammed or is damaged and needs to be replaced. You have two options here.

It's recommended to replace the key fob as well as have a second key made, if you do not have one already.

You can either purchase a new key fob from a local Porsche dealer or find a replacement set online. You would need to find a locksmith who can reprogram it.

  • Buy a Porsche 993 key blank and an electronic key head through an e-commerce website such as eBay.
  • Find a local locksmith in your area.
  • Not all locksmiths are skilled in reprogramming key fobs for the Porsche 993, so ask in advance.
  • If you want a second key made, be sure the locksmith owns a sidewinder cutter, or you'll need to visit a different shop.
  • The total cost for a replacement at a local locksmith should come in at around $100.
  • A dealer could charge anywhere from $40 to $120 for programming and $200 and up for both the key and electronic key head.

Pro Tip

You'll need to visit either a local Porsche dealership or a local locksmith to have your remote key fob reprogrammed.
