Interior Modifications

You have a few main options when it comes to modifying the interior of your vehicle: installation of innovative and technologically advanced LEDs, application of premium car wraps, as well as steering wheel/seat replacements. It is not recommended "breaking the bank," so consider which of the following upgrades works best for your budget.

LED Lighting

DIY Cost$10-$250

Professional Cost $50-$300

Skill Level – Easy to moderate; assembly is required.

When it comes to interior lighting, LEDs not only offer a wide range of custom lighting options, but, in some cases, significantly increases your range of vision. This will make it easier to view maps, and clean hard-to-reach areas inside your vehicle's cabin, which, due to its sporty design, is compact.

The most popular option when it comes to an LED light system is to replace the overhead lights in your Porsche 997. It is also recommended switching your trunk light over to LEDs. Your vehicle's trunk has a limited cargo capacity of between 130 and 135 liters. LEDs could provide greater illumination making it easier to store racing equipment.

However, you may want to hold off on switching over your door lights to LEDs. It might not shine bright enough to provide sufficient illumination for this area of your cabin. Recommended for its increase in visibility.

Alcantara/Leather/Vinyl Wrapping

DIY Cost– $50 and up

Professional Cost – $2,500 and up

Skill Level – Easy to moderate; professional experience is required for more "advanced" applications.

Wraps offer a fun, and, sometimes, affordable way to change the look as well as feel of your Porsche 997; however, pricing depends on the quality and the amount of material required. The easiest option is to cover (or "re-skin") your steering wheel, center console, or other interior trim. Popular options include Alcantara, leather, and vinyl.

  • Racing enthusiasts usually go for the Alcantara because it provides stronger gripping action. Everyday drivers, who value durability over performance, typically go for the leather option. Drivers, who value low maintenance while still wanting to enjoy an attractive steering wheel, go for the vinyl option.
  • Vinyl is much more prone to cracks, while Alcantara is much more prone to wear. However, leather can fade if not properly maintained.
  • "Re-skinning" your interior can guard against scratches, wear and tear, as well as provide a much-needed upgrade.

You can upgrade to a steering wheel with paddle shifters, which are more popular due to their look and ability to create a more intuitive driving experience. Paddle shifters are ideal for racing enthusiasts seeking to spend a lot of time on the track. Recommended for its fun and affordable look.

Seat Upgrades

DIY Cost – $500-$3,000

Professional Cost – $750-$3,250

Skill Level – Moderate; requires safe removal of original seats without damaging air bags, and coding out any system errors when air bags not detected.

Upgrading to a leather or Alcantara steering wheel is a cheap way to modify the interior of your Porsche 997 without breaking the bank. However, if you can afford it, it is also recommended upgrading your seats. Porsche 997 owners are raving about the GT2/GT3 CF sport bucket seats, which are comfortable (even for long trips). Also, they are enjoyed by daily drivers as well as racing enthusiasts.

Some owners have noted, however, that these and other aftermarket sport bucket seats can be challenging to get in and out of, especially for drivers with a bad back. Recommended for its comfort.

Pro Tip

Always compare prices before purchasing modification materials.
