Deep Bond

Porsche owners often develop a deep bond with their vehicles, one that goes far beyond the typical consumer and what they might just consider a basic mode of transportation. That's particularly true of George Vaccaro and this 1967 Porsche 912, a car he bought new with the sole intention of using it to drive around Europe, then sell before he came home to the U.S. But as it turns out, his 912 - which was recently sold on Bring a Trailer - just wasn't ready to let Vaccaro go.

Love Affair

Vaccaro purchased the 912 for his 10-country tour of Europe back in 1967 for the paltry sum of $4,515, according to Car and Driver, rather than renting a car for that journey. He and his wife figured they could get enough back out of the car to make it worthwhile. However, both fell in love with the car during their journey and wound up importing what would become "Gray Fox" back to the U.S. instead of selling it.

Driver's Choice

Vaccaro wound up keeping the 912 for the rest of his life, and obviously took amazing care of the car. The Slate Gray beauty still looks no worse for wear, even though he actually drove the car. The 1.6-liter flat-four powerplant is still present, as is the four-speed manual transmission - a combination that made the 912 a fantastically light driver's car in its heyday.

Family Heirloom

The same goes for the immaculate black interior, which looks like brand new. Sadly, Vaccaro passed away earlier this year at the age of 80, at which point the Porsche was passed on to his twin daughters. And while they appreciate what it means to their family, they also want the 912 to go to someone who appreciates cars and can take care of it for decades to come.

Refreshed and Ready

Today, the 912 has 89,000 miles showing on the odometer, but it has rolled over at least once thanks to Vaccaro's affinity for driving it. However, it looks no worse for wear today, thanks to an engine-out overhaul two years ago that included an interior restitch, repaint, and mechanical refresh.

Famous Car

This cool old Porsche has enjoyed quite the spotlight in recent years, including appearances at numerous shows like the Rennsport Reunion, Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance, Werks Reunion, and Marin Sonoma Concours, and it was featured in a 2007 issue of Excellence magazine in addition to its recent Car and Driver feature.

Striking a Chord

As one might imagine, the story of this 912 really struck a chord with enthusiasts, who were happy to bid it up to a whopping $138k at auction. That's a lot of coin for a high-mile 912, but cars this loved certainly don't come up for sale very often, and for a good reason.
