Rolling Art

Porsches have long been popular blank canvases for artists, and for good reason. After all, these cars wear iconic styling, to begin with, so why not use it as a rolling billboard for your artistic talents? That's precisely the case with this 1989 911 Carrera that recently crossed the virtual block at Bring a Trailer, where it was bid up to $72,000 but failed to hit its reserve price.

Collaborative Project

This particular Porsche was painted by artist Dominic Besner and collaborator Yves Thibeault for the Art Cars Project, hosted by Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec in Canada, in which a handful of Porsches were finished by different artists. Besner's drew up the art first, after which it was transposed on the car by Thibeault, an automotive painter.

Unique Finish

This particular car, one of four painted as part of the project, was named "Masterpiece III." And, as one can already tell, it's truly unique. Thibeault applied the one-off paintwork using a variety of techniques, including airbrushing, felt-tip markers, spray paint, finger paint, and spray paint for a truly fascinating finish.

Tidy Cabin

Other than its one-off paint job, this Porsche is basically just a stock 1989 911. The interior is tan with black accents and is mostly original, save for the addition of a Kenwood head unit. The odometer shows 66k miles, though the CarFax notes a mileage discrepancy. Regardless, the cabin is quite tidy in appearance.

Solid Runner

The same goes for the engine bay, which is undoubtedly clean. There you'll find the original 3.2-liter flat-six powerplant, which has recently received an oil change and a new battery, but is otherwise original and apparently in good running condition.

More to Come

The Art Cars Project isn't finished just yet, as the fifth car is reportedly being built as we speak and the plan is to paint eight 911s in total before it's all said and done. Regardless, each is a true one-off that would look great in anyone's personal car collection.

Conversation Piece

Unfortunately, for now, this particular art car hasn't found a new home just yet. As they say, art is truly subjective, but we find this Porsche to be a very cool conversation piece, and imagine that it won't be long before buyer and seller come to a consensus on price.
