Hot on the heels of the 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS's debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche's GT division was back at the New York International Auto Show, held from Mar 30, 2018 – Apr 8, 2018, with the unveiling of their new GT3 RS Weissach Package. The $188,550 (base price) 911 GT3 RS is impressive enough, with its 4.0-liter flat-six belting out 520-horsepower—a bump of 20hp above the $144,650 standard GT3's rating—and spinning up to a redline of 9000 rpm, but the Weissach package adds more by adding less.

Pittance

The new Weissach Package, which bumps performance by shaving weight, adds another $18,000 to the price of the GT3 RS. Naturally, it's heavy on carbon fiber content, most of it naturally-finished so passersby don't mistake this for a garden variety $190,000 sports car. The trunk lid, hood, roof, and wing are all visible carbon and somehow seem less garish and more track-concentrated on the Weissach than does naked carbon on similar supercar packages. Porsche's choice of green for the show car complements the dark carbon especially well, as does the white-finished example in Porsche's publicity pics.

Displays

That wing is emblazoned with the word 'Porsche' in giant letters spanning its width, joined inside by more special branding on the headrests, which receive package-specific embroidering, and the Weissach plaque-affixed dash. The show car was wearing optional forged-magnesium wheels in black—at $13,000 a must-have addition. Rolling mass is even more important than body panels don'tcha know.

Adds Up

Those true-magnesium mag wheels, when combined with the Weissach Package's carbon bits, cut the GT3 RS' weight down to 3,153 pounds. The weight-loss breaks down like this: 25 pounds for the wheels as compared with aluminum units, 1.1 pounds for the roof, half a pound via the carbon-fiber steering wheel, and a sizeable 11.9-pound drop coming from suspension coupling rods and carbon-fiber sway bars.

Family Firsts

The 2019 Weissach GT3 RS will mark the Weissach Package's first appearance on a 911 GT3 RS. Recently the Weissach appellation made waves as an $84,000 option for the Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar. The lightweight bits helped to reduce mass on the 918 enough to allow it to hit 0 to 60 mph times of a mere 2.6 seconds, and reach 124mph (200kph) in only 7.2 seconds. Porsche hasn't quoted any acceleration numbers for the  Weissach version of the GT3 RS, but it's conceivable 0 to 60 mph times could break the three-second barrier.

Have it Your Way

At around a 10% price premium, the new Weissach Package seems like a no-brainer and we can see auction catalogs 10 years from now reading: "This exceptional 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS would not be complete with the desirable carbon fiber premium Weissach Package." In fact, the only reason one maybe wouldn't opt for it is that some buyers might not be down with the flashy visible-fiber look. No worries there, Porsche thought of that. The New 911 GT3 RS is available with your own custom paint-to-match finish... as an additional cost option.
