Pure Refinement

Porsche's Macan Turbo isn't a vehicle that's ever lacked for speed or good looks. But of course, that won't stop the automaker from refining its compact SUV. And for the 2020 model year, that's exactly what they've done - refined it with more power, better braking, and a few visual updates.

Less Displacement, More Power

To accomplish this, Porsche first ditched the last Macan Turbo's 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 for the same 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 also found in the larger Cayenne SUV and the Panamera. The new engine produces 434 hp in this guise, a full 34 more than the outgoing mill, and 405 lb-ft of torque.

Quicker, Faster

That's enough grunt to propel the new Macan Turbo to 60 miles per hour in just 4.3-seconds or 0.3-seconds faster than the outgoing model. Opt for the Sport Chrono Package, and that number dips to 4.1-seconds, also a 0.3-second improvement. Top speed also increases 3 mph to 167.

Sandbagging?

The rest of the drivetrain remains unchanged, which means power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive. And as we've seen in the past, we expect the new Turbo to be faster than what Porsche's conservative estimates claim.

Stopping Power

The other big news for 2020 is that the Macan Turbo has received some serious new brakes. The automaker's Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB), which first premiered with the third-generation Cayenne models, offers an upgrade in both stopping power and aesthetics.

Dust Reduction

The PSCB system features brake rotors coated in an ultra-hard layer of tungsten carbide that helps reduce brake dust by up to 90 percent and provide sharper a response to pedal input from the driver. Punctuating this are a set of white calipers(!). After an initial driving period, the rotors also take on a mirror-like finish.

Standard Equipment

A Sport Exhaust system also joins the list of standard performance equipment on the 2020 Macan Turbo. New 20-inch wheels replace the outgoing 19-inchers, and Porsche's Active Suspension Management (PASM) dampers are also now standard equipment.

Optional Equipment

Those who wish to check some things on the options list won't be lacking, either. Height-adjustable air suspension with optimized rolling pistons and new shock absorber hydraulics, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV +), and the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) are available as extra-cost options.

Revised Looks

For 2020, the Macan Turbo also wears a unique front fascia with three large air intakes, Sport Design side skirts, and Sport Design exterior mirrors finished in body color. Dual strip LED fog lights and LED headlights including Porsche's Dynamic Light System (PDLS) are standard equipment. Out back, the SUV receives a revised taillight design and a redesigned roof spoiler.

Good Value?

Together with an Alcantara headliner, 18-way Adaptive Sport Seats, and a 14-speaker Bose Surround Sound system as standard equipment, the 2020 Macan Turbo almost seems like a bargain at the $83,600 asking price (excluding $1,350 for processing, delivery, and handling). But we'll find out for sure when it reaches U.S. dealerships later this year.
