5 Porsche Appearances in Movies You Should Check Out

Porsche has been a staple of American cinema whenever a director wants an easy way to connote wealth or cool on a character. Here's a handful of the more iconic Porsche appearances in mainstream film.

1. Annie Hall

Woody Allen's 1977 masterpiece Annie Hall may be the greatest romantic comedy ever made. Among the darkest scenes in the movie is when Allen's character, Alvy Singer, is in the car with Annie Hall's deranged brother Duane (a young Christopher Walken). Driving through the night together in a Porsche 911, the brother starts giving off red flags that he may have not be all there. The scene is short, but it's impossible to forget.

Duane: "Sometimes on the road at night, I have this sudden impulse to turn the wheel quickly, head-on, into the oncoming car."

Alvy: "I have to go now, Duane, because I'm due back on the planet Earth."

2. Risky Business

Even if you haven't seen it, you've at least heard of Risky Business and what happens to the Porsche. The film's plot and Tangerine Dream score aside, it's also known as the flick that flung a young Tom Cruise into the limelight. One of the most enduring images from the film is the dad character's Porsche. The '79 model Porsche 928 becomes a pretty significant plot point in the story, specifically when he drops it into a lake. We could have hoped for a better send-off for such a beautiful car, but there's absolutely no doubt that Risky Business helped define what Porsche represented throughout the 1980s.

3. Sixteen Candles

It's interesting to note that so many of Porsche's most iconic movie moments aren't chase scenes in action movies. We all know how fierce Porsche is on the road, so seeing it used in more sentimental, domestic depictions of "cool" casts it in a fresh light. Sixteen Candles is a pristine example of the 1980s teen movie, and the iconic red Porsche 944 is used to symbolize just how awesome of a catch this guy is. There's a lot a movie can say about a character by the car they're seen driving in.

4. No Man's Land

Porsche has never gotten the same kind of showcase movies as the Corvette or Mustang. The film No Man's Land is probably about as close as it gets to a true "Porsche movie." With a story revolving around a rookie cop (D.B. Sweenie), and a car thief (Charlie Sheen) who only steals Porsches, you can imagine there's a lot of proper eye candy for the car lovers among us.

5. Top Gun

Tony Scott's Top Gun is always up there when 1980s movies are brought up. You'd think in a movie about fighter jets a mere car wouldn't draw anyone's attention, but as it happens, this Porsche 356 Speedster was up to the challenge. It should be noted that this is not a true vintage 356, Tony Scott used a replica, but you wouldn't be able to tell from the audience. The roadster exudes automotive class and undoubtedly helped to boost the characters' coolness cred to even greater heights than their fighter piloting gig already conferred upon them.
