1. Not a 911

The main reason the GT4 is so good is a simple one: it’s not a 911. Let me explain. 911s get trapped in a vortex where they have to be the fastest to stay ahead of rivals that use trick technology like PDK, etc. This sucks some of the life out the driving experience in favor of lap times. The GT4 doesn’t get stuck here so Porsche is free to build a real driver’s car.

2. Perfect Balance

Straight out of the box, this car needs very little to improve it. An immediate natural on the circuit and backroads, you never feel heavy weight teeter tottering around behind you. This car inspires confidence in the driver right from the showroom floor.

3. Looks to Kill

Compared to a 911, it must be said this car has a very racey look that carries through into the 2 seater interior. Designs like this will stay relevant for a long time to come. Sleek, low, and ready to do battle where ever it chooses. These cars are awesome.

4. Manual Mid-Engine

One of the best things about the Cayman GT4 is also one of the strangest: it’s difficult to name mid-engine cars that come with a manual transmission these days. In the last few years, most cars that follow the MR layout are almost exclusively equipped with dual-clutch transmissions. No one offers the overall driving experience of a mid-engine car quite like Porsche.

5. Priced Well

At prices that hover in the $85,000 to $100,000 mark, the GT4 can compete in performance to cars that cost several body organs. You’re paying for a road legal race car that has enough creature comforts to make you forget how capable it is. Very little needs to be done to one of these to make a threat to all but the fastest machines at a track day.

Final Thoughts

The Cayman GT4 is one of the best cars Porsche has ever made. It exists outside the scrutiny of the 911 in a space where track speed and driver involvement are held above all else. You won't find used GT4s in decent condition for less than $85K, but the moment you drive one you will understand why it is worth every penny, and then some.

With the 718 GT4 and its Boxter Spyder counterpart spied testing not too long ago, it is safe to say we are eagerly awaiting the reveal of a new breed. We can't wait to see Porsche top one of their greatest products yet again, and give us another amazing driver's car.
