1. Risky Business

But isn't that just a dumb teen sex comedy with Tom Cruise dancing around in his undies? No, it's not. Okay, yes. Yes, it has faux-teenagers, and some sex, and a little comedy... and that Seger song. But those are just the window dressing that undoubtedly helped put butts in the seats back in 1983. It was writer-director Paul Brickman's first outing as a director and it's a much darker film than its press would suggest. He shows what happens when we face our fears, and takes us to 'be careful what you wish for because you just might get it' territory... and then he asks: 'what's next?'  But about that Porsche... the 928 was chosen specifically by the director, and it's one of the three stars on the poster. "Paul Brickman said that they considered a 911, but it was 'too mundane,' that was the word he used," said Lewis Johnsen, a former owner of one of the five 928s used in the film, and producer of a documentary about Risky Business. Johnsen also says that producer John Avnet asked for free cars from Porsche but was told: "No way, we don't want anything to do with a movie about a prostitute." [Porsche disputes this account, it must be mentioned.]

In the 2012 documentary about him, national treasure Harry Dean Stanton explains how he encouraged Rebecca De Mornay, who was his girlfriend at the time, to do the movie with Cruise... and how soon after that she was dating Cruise in his place. There are worse things than falling in Lake Michigan. Be careful what you wish for.

2. Middle Age Crazy

When a Texas taco stand entrepreneur gets to feeling that tug, the one that says, "life is short, live the life you want before its over," he doesn't buy a Miata or a Corvette or even a Ferrari. He buys a white 928. That's exactly what reliably-great actor Bruce Dern does in 1980's Middle Age Crazy. Also starring (inexplicably hyphenated) Ann-Margret this is a humble little film with some nice scenes of dream car tire-kicking and a sight gag involving tossing a tube of drawings at a closed 928 window. It's not Star Wars, but Star wars doesn't have any Porsches. So there.

3. Looker

Underachiever Michael Crichton, after graduating from Harvard Medical School, but before penning Jurassic Park, directed a pseudo-erotic sci-fi film called Looker. Like all good 40-year-old science fiction, it dealt with things that are happening to us today—memories stolen away by entertainment companies, scanning human bodies so that actors and models become redundant, you know... real up stuff. Looker stars Albert Finney and features a pre-LA Law Susan Dey—and a 928 that of course ends up in water. Less wonderful that Crichton's earlier film, Coma, Looker is an '80s (1981) film paced like a late '70s film, so don't expect to be hooked 5 minutes in. Still, it works as sci-fi and there are some visually arresting moments that make this worth an hour and 33 minutes of your time.

4. Banzai Runner

In the 80's, after the word 'Turbo', the next coolest thing was anything Japanese: Ninja, Samurai... Banzai Runner. The important thing to know about this movie is that there are extended street racing sequences with supercars. A Lamborghini Miura races a chopped pick-up truck, and our hero—a white 928—goes wheel-to-wheel with a yellow Pantera. And Dean Stockwell, a few years down the road from goofing off with Devo in rocker Neil Young's unusual film Human Highway, is our hero and fellow 928 enthusiast. This might be the weakest of the films on this list but that's okay, the racing scenes alone are worth the price of that eBay VHS copy you just bought.

5. AC/DC Let There Be Rock, Live from Paris 1979 - Walk All Over You

This was a new one to some of us here at Rennlist, but AC/DC did, in fact, get their record company (or somebody) to spring for a day of sliding a Porsche 928 around in the snow, not to mention horsing around with bi-and tri-planes. I guess that's why they call them Rockstars. You can witness the boys from down under being boys in the concert film AC/DC Let There Be Rock (1980).

6. Top Gear Patagonia Special

In 2014, the Top Gear UK film crew went to South America to film what would be, unknown to them, their last special. Fearless leader Jeremy Clarkson chose a 928 S4 as his companion for this adventure but the license plate it wore hit the internet and mobilized a vocal (and stone-throwing) group of Argentinians who were convinced the plate was a secret "eff you" to them, having to do with the Falklands War. These troubles resulted in the crew making an early exit and abandoning the Porsche. Few 928s have suffered as cruel a fate. What remains is likely as gorgeous footage as has ever been shot of a Porsche 928 in nature. Highly recommended and genuinely affecting.
