It was Found by Allied Troops in 1945
After Germany surrendered in World War II the Allies would find themselves exploring new territory. One of those places was a small village called Gmünd in which a large portion of the original Porsche staff was kept to undertake engineering projects during the war. They were completely hidden from the outside world in the mountainous town.
First Car was a Hybrid
And it’s well over 100 years old now. The Lohner-Porsche was battery-powered with electric engines powering each of its front wheels. Interesting to think after 100 years we are calling this technology “the future” of the automobile and high performance. Porsche had it figured out before everyone!!!
They built Tanks
With names like the Tiger 1 and Elefant, it’s not hard to see the Cayenne and Cayman falling far from the family tree. That’s right, the now famous sports car company was once famous for something far more earth-shaking than a GT3 RS. Robust and heavy Ferdinand’s designs were cutting edge enough to earn him the National Prize of Art and Science.
ZF-Connection
ZF is a company you know whether you realize it or not. These are the guys who produce the double clutch gearboxes found in every 911 produced today. Dating back to the type 114 these two power-houses have been working together since the 1930s!
Formula 1
Internationally recognized as a sports car racing company first and foremost, Porsche’s foray into Formula 1 is long and complex. While they never dominated the sport the 804 did have success at the hands of Dan Gurney in races like the 1962 Solitude Grand Prix. To earn this victory the P-car team would beat Jim Clark and Lotus who qualified over a second faster!
