Trailer queen - kind of

Porsche’s Cayman is one of the world’s most desirable sports cars in its segment. With its mid-engined configuration, it has balance and agility few rivals can equal. This natural balance also makes it an excellent track weapon, and as such, Porsche has done the obvious and evolved the Cayman into a Clubsport road racer. Unlike the Cayman GT4, this Clubsport version is not road-legal, so you’ll need to truck it to the circuit for your fun.

Yellow with black splash color option

Porsche will offer a significant level of customization with its Cayman GT4 Clubsport racers. The car’s graphics can be ordered in an array of colorways and designs to the customer's tastes. Fortunately, the Cayman’s mid-engined proportions can carry virtually any color or surface pattern well. So go nuts when thinking of a livery because it's almost impossible to create an unattractive GT4 Clubsport racer.

Some trick 911 bits added to this Cayman

Although the GT4 Clubsport has evolved from Porsche’s Cayman platform, there are a few tricky bits that apply to this new car. In the pursuit of even sharper handling and turn-in, Porsche has transferred the front suspension from the 911 GT3 Cup to the GT4 Clubsport. The rear suspension features an adjustable anti-roll bar and each wheel has an adjustable camber.

A natural anti-lift device

As with any Porsche that has been designed for circuit use, the Cayman GT4 Clubsport has a very special rear wing. Its angle of attack is perfectly set to create the appropriate volume of downforce at speed, but its structure is what is really interesting. To keep weight down, this rear wing is made from natural flax fibers, processed into a composite-type structure. Leave it up to Porsche to nitpick over a spoiler where other automakers might just throw some carbon fiber on it.

No screens inside this mid-engined Porsche

Most of the road car Cayman trim and paneling remains unchanged in the GT4 Clubsport, but the infotainment system has naturally been sacrificed. Where you would ordinarily find the SatNav or media screen, there is now a selection of controls that vary the traction control intervention threshold, overall stability control parameter and ABS sharpness. There is also an engine cut-off function for safety and well...racecar.

Where did the top of that steering wheel go?

Porsche has replaced the production car instrumentation with a Cosworth race readout. The steering wheel is also a fully race functional three-quarter rim item, with specific satellite control functions that don’t pertain to selecting a SatNav destination or media streaming service. Each control on this steering wheel is to set a specific function the Clubsport’s dynamic driving balance.

A very pretty - and potent - race car

The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a gloriously focused track day toy. For those racers who wish to have a balanced car, that flatters instead of intimidates, this is a great choice. It is powered by Porsche’s legendary 3.8-liter flat-six engine and manages to produce 425hp, which is more than the road-going Cayman GT4’s 380hp. The job of forward motion has been given to the rear wheels via a six-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission system. And what of the price you ask? One can sit in your garage for just $165 000.
