For the love of Porsches

Real Muscle Cars (RMC) Miami has their share of American muscle and European exotics, but perhaps the most impressive part of their inventory is the assemblage of rare and unique Porsches. RMC's stock has included early long-hood 911s, outlaw builds, RUF-tuned cars, and even newer water-cooled variants, but many would agree that the hidden gems are their DP Motorsport 935 street cars. In particular, their 1991 964 Turbo with a full DP Motorsport 935 kit is said to be the only one in existence.

Design and Plastik

Chances are that if you were into Porsches in the 70's and 80's, you have heard the name DP Motorsport. For those that may be unfamiliar with the German tuner, it was officially started in the early 70's by Ekkehard Zimmermann when he began producing lightweight bodywork first for the Kremer Racing 911 RSR. This would eventually lead to the development of the 935 K3 that first appeared in the 1979 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. While the 70's solely focused on the development of racing cars, the 80's saw Zimmerman and DP shift their efforts to road-going variants that implemented the extreme aerodynamics and performance tuning into street-legal cars. Today, DP is run by Ekkehard's son, Patrick, and they still focus on producing featherweight Porsches for the road and track.

A German Vacation

Having acquired several DP Motorsport cars, Danny Lima (owner of RMC) elected to make a stop at the DP facility while en-route to this year's Techno-Classica event in Essen, Germany. While setting foot in the legendary tuner's work space must have been awesome in its own right, perhaps more so was the fact that he was informed about another 935 for sale by the original owner that was only several miles away. As you may have already figured out, Danny saw the car pictured here, made a deal, and had it shipped back to the states.

Applying Aerodynamics

The car began life as a 1991 964 Turbo, which is actually quite rare to begin with as only 3,660 units were ever produced before the Turbo 3.6 was introduced. The car was then handed over to DP Motorsport in 1994 in order to receive the last iteration of the street 935 kit composed of various carbon-Kevlar components. The kit combines the iconic slant nose with fender louvers, wide front and rear arches that blend seamlessly into widened rocker panels, a front fascia with enormous air ducts and Group 5 styled headlights, an extended decklid with a massive rear wing, and a tasty rear bumper cover with a center-exit exhaust.

For Show and Go

Under that huge decklid (which is easily removed from the car) sits the original 3.3L turbocharged flat-six that has been fitted with an upgraded K27 "S" turbocharger and accompanying cooling and fueling mods to produce 450 horsepower. The suspension has been improved with Bilstein PSS10 coilovers and the car rides on a set of period correct Speedline 3.6 18" wheels.

Period Styling

The chassis is stiffened via a DP Motorsport cage that definitely gives it that race car feel from the cockpit. The seats are a pair of DP's DP35 racing buckets with a set of Willans harnesses to keep the occupants firmly in place. Most of the interior remains standard 964 kit besides the thickened TechArt steering wheel and a set of white-faced gauges. A neat touch is the signature of Mr. DP himself, Ekkehard Zimmermann, on the face of the passenger side dash.

DP Distinct

The car came from Germany having been completely refreshed and repainted, meaning it was ready to hit the road upon arrival. One of the biggest hurdles with this car must have been getting it TÜV certified back in the day, but it ultimately received its stamp of approval and was officially deemed road-legal. The DP Motorsport 964 Turbo has now been running around the streets of Miami and is turning heads wherever it goes.  It is unique and quite special because it is considered to be the final evolution of the 935, and the only one to be built from a 964. In essence, this car brings an important piece of Porsche's racing heritage to the street that can be shared with newcomers and enthusiasts alike.
