FIA GT Championship

There was a time when people paid close attention to what manufacturer racing teams were achieving on the race track. And the FIA GT Championship served as the premier proving grounds for sports cars of all kinds. And given Porsche's legendary history in motorsports, it as inevitable that the 993 generation of the Porsche 911 would eventually end up with a race car on the biggest stage.

Homologation Special

Porsche's entry into the GT2 competition was none other than the 911 GT2 race car. FIA regulations also required a number of homologation production models of the race cars to be built and sold. And that brought about the 911 GT2, limited to a production run of just 172 units.

Creating the Monster

To create the road-legal version of the race car, Porsche would start with a 911 Turbo and go to work turning it into an ultra-aggressive track-ready beast. Cutting down on the vehicle's weight was the number one objective. Everything that didn't serve a necessary purpose to the car's performance was deleted, bringing the total curb weight down to just 2,855 pounds.

Race Car Look

The already wide fenders of the Turbo would receive even more width courtesy of those bolted-on composite wheel arches. The 911 GT2 was also equipped with aerodynamic elements such as a front splitter and the extra-large rear wing, with built-in air intake ducts into the 3.6-liter flat-six motor.

Powerful and Engaging

Speaking of the motor, Porsche engineers reworked the air-cooled mechanism to produce an impressive 430 horsepower and 432 lb-ft of torque. All that power straight to the rear wheels makes this one of, if not the most engaging Porsche driving experience in existence. And perhaps the most dangerous as well! Acceleration was outstanding even by the standards of today's high-end sports cars, with a 0-60 time of just 3.9 seconds.

Fetching Big Numbers

This particular 911 GT2 was originally ordered by a Japanese customer, although in left-hand drive configuration. The car later made its way to the US, and now resides in the UK, where it's being auctioned off. Even if you've not been keeping up with sale prices for these special Porsches, the used prices of ordinary 993s should serve as an indication that these machines go for amounts well over a million dollars. As of this writing, the bid for this Porsche stands at $500,000, and the auction closes on August 22nd.
