Big Opportunity

While they don't exactly make great road cars, that won't stop us from dreaming of driving racers on the street. We don't care if they're loud, obnoxious, difficult to drive, and downright dangerous, there's just something undeniably appealing about the idea. Now, one lucky person can make it a reality, as this amazing street-legal Porsche 962 is currently up for sale at Issimi.

Time of Conversion

The 962 is a rare beast in its own right, as Porsche built just 125 of them in total. However, at the end of its tenure on the track, several companies set out to transform them for street use. One such outfit was Koenig Specials, which at the time had developed a reputation for building some pretty wild, turbocharged widebody exotic cars.

Reengineered for the Streets

Based in Munich, Germany, Koenig actually owned and competed in a 962, so they already knew the car inside and out. Thus, they set about completely reengineering the Porsche racer for road use, modifying its architecture to make it suitable for the streets, eventually naming its creation the C62.

Plenty of Power

While it looks like a 962, the C62 shares no body panels with its race car counterpart, and required a ton of bodywork to meet German regulations. It's powered by a 911-derived 3.4-liter air-cooled engine with twin turbos, two-valve heads, Motronic fuel injection, and individual throttle bodies, which is good enough to make 550 horsepower at the wheels.

Road Modifications

Koenig also addressed the C62's suspension, giving it softer springs and dampers to help smooth out potholes and rough roads, and added street pads to the original brakes. They also gave the car a plexiglass engine lid and opening front compartment so that owners wouldn't have to remove the entire clamshell to perform maintenance, though they still can if they really want to.

Changing Hands

Koenig originally planned to build 30 C62s, but with a price tag over $1 million at the time, only three were ultimately produced. This is the second of those three cars and was sold to a Japanese collector back in 1991. It remained in that country and changed hands a few times before it was sold again and imported to the U.S. in 2019.

Solid Bargain

Despite this, the car only has around 5,000 kilometers on the clock and remains in stunning original condition. And, at the same time, it's actually a pretty solid bargain at the asking price of $995,000, given its rarity and the fact that it cost more than that new. Personally, if we had the means to do so, we'd scoop this street-legal racer up in a heartbeat and enjoy it on public roads - just like Koenig intended.
