Beautiful Timepieces Made from Wrecked Classic 911s (Photos)
Copenhagen watch company REC has been busy turning old 911s into timeless timepieces for enthusiasts the world over.
1. Recycled Porsches
REC, an environmentally conscious watchmaker, has been manufacturing clocks of all sorts from recycled materials. Their raison d'etre is making lovely timepieces from recycled old-school cars that are unfortunately past the point of repair. What better way to show your love for a Porsche that can no longer drive than by letting it serve you in a different aspect?
2. The 901 Collection
REC calls the salvaged Porsche watches the 901 Collection, after the original internal number of the prototype 911. If you haven't put two and two together yet, the watches are all made from the bits and pieces of old Porsche 911s. The three watches that make up the collection come in a variety of materials and technology that are all top shelf. On the back of the watch, you first see the display back which immediately sends you to thoughts of the Otto Fuchs wheel that the classic Porsche would wear. Between each spoke of the "wheel", you can see the Miyota 9100 making its time keeping trips around the face.
3. From gasoline to green sustain-ably
The three models that are currently up for sale are the 901-01, 901-02, and the 901-03. The interior of the watches features Miyota 9100 movement to ensure smooth time keeping. The look of each watch is due to the varying unique patina of each car's ruin. In addition, each watch is engraved with the original VIN of the car it owes its life to. To add to that, every watch has a code that can be scanned to unlock a "Story Card." These Cards will give new watch owners a look into the story of their 911 and how it ultimately ended up on their wrists.
4. The details
REC wanted the spirit of Porsche to really shine through in the watch and included subtle winks that only true enthusiasts will pick up on. The font on the watch is the same original font that Porsche used on cars from the early 911 era. Ridges on the side of the dial harken back to the grille on the rear of the 911. The various leather bands point to the supple leather interiors that would hold Porsche owners while driving. Remember that "wheel" I mentioned earlier on the back of the watch? Well, when you look at the Miyota 9100 through the gaps you'll see a rotor that is decorated with dots to appear like a cross drilled disc brake.
5. Finishing touches
If you are curious as to which model will be right for you, we'll go through the differences before closing things out. The 901-01 can be had with a cool black leather band features grey nubuck by the lugs. The 901-02 is the lightweight of the three and comes with a brown strap to top off the classic design that would look great in the summer. Finally, the 901-03 that is outfitted with a black leather strap that dances with ribbed padding detail and orange accent stitching. If you are interested in owning one of these, the 901 Collection has a starting price of $895, with an eventual retail price of $1,795.
