Many a track day arguments have risen debating what is the best car. While there isn’t really a clear answer these are my thoughts:

Mid-engine rules

There really isn’t a debate about the benefits of a mid-engine vehicle. The balance you get from cramming an engine right behind the driver is a major packaging advantage. Almost all top level supercars are mid-engine for this reason. Moving a majority of the mass of a car to the center allows for great transitional feel and corner entry balance.

You get what you pay for

When it comes to overall build quality Porsche does it better than any other manufacturer. If you want to check every box when buying a car you get something from Stuttgart. This is especially true for newer models. Although there is a big price difference the Boxster S has come an incredibly long way and is leaps and bounds ahead of even the improved second generation S2000.

Performance

Modern PDK transmissions and turbocharged 4 cylinder motors with launch control simply outperform technology from almost a decade ago. Throwing a good set of tires onto a new Boxster S would make it a blast to sling through corners at your favorite race track. Do the same to an S2000 and you will notice a lack of torque immediately. Boxsters have grunt down low these days and move off of the corners better than they have any right to. Porsche transmissions feel a lot better than Honda's as well.

Claustrophobia

Boxsters are comfortable. Honda’s S2000 was a great car to be in if you’re small, but if you’re not it’s going to be something you want to jump out of within 30 minutes. Ergonomics inside the Porsche are thought out more and you can legitimately use a Boxster as a daily driver/track car/road tripper and do so in leisure. That’s worth extra money to me.

Spec Series

Yup. The P-car has its own spec series and it is very affordable. Cars can be found online for super cheap (well race car super cheap) with typical costs running around $20,000 to $30,000. One of the added bonuses about this series is that it focuses more on race craft and driver ability rather than simply out modifying the other cars on the grid. Spec Boxster is a great series that allows Porsche owners to compete against each other. Another win for Germany.

Money no object

Cost is a real factor in debating cars, but ignoring them and simply looking at them as machines you have to give the nod to the Boxster. It’s one of the classic sports cars and has evolved with every new version. It will only continue to get better in years to come. I wonder what the next car people will compare it to, but will more than likely choose it every time!
