Brazen Thieves Steal 911 GT3 From Dealership
This Porsche 911 GT3 is one of several vehicles stolen straight from a dealer.
Common Trend
In recent years, we've seen a steady rise in automotive theft in the U.S., but perhaps more notably, many of those who commit these crimes are doing so directly from automakers and dealerships. In the latter case, criminals are simply breaking into dealers and taking the keys, then driving off into the night with multiple vehicles before police can arrive. This happened yet again at Mike and Tony Auto Sales & Service in South Windsor, Connecticut recently, and the whole thing was captured on security footage posted by the news outlet WFSB 3.
Big Time Heist
According to police, this crime took place at around 1:10 a.m. in the middle of the week, at which point one person among a group of thieves broke a window at the dealership to gain access. Within 15 minutes, they had made off with a number of vehicles valued at a whopping $380,000.
Battering Ram
The thieves made off with four vehicles in total, using one to breach the fence around the dealership and make room for a getaway. “They use the GMC Terrain to actually ram through our gate so that the other vehicles can escape,” said Shamar Mahon, sales manager, Mile and Tony Auto Sales.
Possible Lead
Along with the purple 911 GT3, the other three vehicles consisted of a 2022 Dodge Ram, a 2022 Dodge Charger, and the aforementioned 2022 GMC Terrain. At around 3:45 a.m., police were able to use the GPS device in one of those vehicles to track it to New York City, but as of this writing, none of the stolen vehicles has been recovered just yet.
Losing Proposition
Unfortunately for the dealer, this isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened, either. “I’m still trying to pull myself together from all this,” Mahon said. “It’s tough waking up in the middle of the night to see we’ve been violated. With each incident, we tried to upgrade our security system. We’ve invested tens of thousands of dollars to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. You’ll put in the proper precautions. We installed that gate, but it seems like no matter what we do, we can’t escape from the grips of these criminals.”
Growing Problem
“I think the best thing you can do is work with the police department and try to identify where the weaknesses may be within businesses,” said South Windsor town manager Michael Maniscalco. “We need the town, we need the state to step in, we need more patrols on Route 5,” he said.
