Cayman, Boxster Rumored To Go All-Electric In 2025
The news comes straight from Porsche dealers.
Confirmation
It's no secret that Porsche is working on developing more electric vehicles to complement the Taycan, including a Macan EV. But the Boxster and Cayman have long been rumored to be going electric as well, particularly since a Cayman EV concept was revealed back in 2017. Now, we seem to have a bit of confirmation that this move is indeed happening, according to a recent report from Automotive News.

Longtime Rumors
A number of Porsche dealers told the auto news source that the Boxster and Cayman will go all-electric in 2025, which is perhaps some of the most unsurprising news we've heard in some time. After all, rumors of Porsche electrifying its small sports car twins originally surfaced roughly two years ago.

Previewing the Future
Many also believe that the recently revealed Mission R concept is a preview of what an electrified race car version of the 718 platform will soon look like. The concept features a Taycan-like front end with a giant light bar out back like that model, albeit attached to a compact coupe, not a sedan or wagon.

Sneak Preview
According to Automotive News, Porsche dealers were actually shown a preview of what the electric 718 will look like in the form of a model with a Taycan-like fastback design, a similar-looking front end, and a full-width taillight. One dealer told the rag that the vehicle was "stunning" and sporty looking."

Lightweight EV
Porsche is reportedly working hard to reduce weight for this future EV, which is critical to maintaining the sublime handling prowess that has made the Cayman and Boxster so popular. The EV models will reportedly ride on a shortened version of the automaker's PPE platform to save a few pounds, though making a lightweight EV will still be a big challenge.

Reserving Judgement
Regardless, these rumors seem to indicate that the Cayman and Boxster EVs will launch sometime in 2025, perhaps after a reveal the year prior. And while the move will certainly be a controversial one, we'll reserve judgment until we get to drive one.
