Swoopy 'Ute

Love them or hate them, "coupe" SUVs are a thing and they aren't going away. You can thank styling-savvy shoppers for that, folks who desire a little swoopy flair on their typically boxy 'utes. And now, Porsche has another contender in that hot market segment with its brand new Cayenne Coupe.

First Taste

Porsche thought so much of its new model that they staged their own debut for the Cayenne Coupe in Stuttgart. But then the public received its first taste of Porsche's first-ever SUV coupe at the Shanghai Auto Show in China.

Hot Product

While there are plenty of SUV coupe detractors out there, Porsche is smart to enter the controversial fray. After all, its best sellers are the Macan and Cayenne, and it isn't even close.

Rivalry Renewed

Both BMW (X6) and Mercedes (GLE Coupe) already offer coupe-styled SUVs as well, so the Cayenne Coupe gives Porsche a proper rival for those existing products.

It Takes Two

As expected, the Cayenne Coupe is available with two different powertrains. The base model comes with the same turbo 3.0-liter V6 as the regular Cayenne, which produces 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Turbo Power

The Cayenne Turbo Coupe comes with a 4.0-liter V8 producing 541 hp and 567 lb-ft. It's capable of doing 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds and can reach 177 mph. That's a big jump over the base model's 5.6-second 0-60 time and 150 mph top speed.

Electrified Future

Porsche has already confirmed that a Cayenne Turbo Coupe S E-Hybrid will join the lineup later on down the road, borrowing the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid's powertrain combo producing 680 hp and 626 lb-ft.

Fresh Proportions

So yes, the Cayenne Coupe is essentially identical to the regular Cayenne. The difference lies in its redesigned proportions. The roof line is significantly steeper than the regular Cayenne, falling away to the rear in dramatic fashion.

Distinguishing Features

Other notable highlights of the Cayenne Coupe include an adaptive rear spoiler, individual rear seats, and either a standard panoramic fixed glass roof or an optional carbon fiber roof.

Future Star

Porsche believes that the Cayenne Coupe is "the sportiest-looking model in the segment," and we're inclined to agree. And while some will undoubtedly continue to argue that there's no such thing as an SUV coupe, we're betting Porsche won't care much as they sell them by the thousands.
