It’s Delta4X4’s Turn

Yes, the classic Porsche 911 off-road conversion trend is still going strong. Aftermarket tuning houses like Gemballa, RUF, Kelly-Moss, and many others have developed exceptional builds in recent months that have reminded us how cool the 1970s/1980s Porsche 911s can look when decked out in this extreme off-road kit.

Now, German aftermarket tuner Delta4X4 is gearing up to do the same, but not on a classic 911; Delta4X4 will be basing their custom off-road Porsche 911 race car build on the new 911 Carrera 4S (992) as per the request of their client. And that’s not all! The client actually wants to drive this project car from Germany to Dakar, so Delta4X4 will have to go all the way with this build, transforming it into a genuine off-road machine. Porsche won the Paris-Dakar rally in 1984 with a 911, so it’s already been proven that the 911 can handle the harshness of the roads and trails that lead up to Dakar. The recently launched 992 is the most refined and advanced 911 iteration yet. It will be interesting to see how it will perform on off-road terrain when Delta 4X4 is done with it. According to Delta4X4, this custom 992 off-road race car will be revealed in 2021.

Perfect for the Job

Delta4X4 has been transforming trucks, SUVs, and other vehicles into extreme off-road machines for over 40 years. Also, these guys are no strangers to the unforgiving dirt roads and trails of the Paris-Dakar rally. In 1982, they took part in the Paris-Dakar rally with an 80-hp Suzuki Jimny, and while it didn’t rack up any medals, it finished the race, which is quite an achievement. Delta4X4 is definitely the right outfit for the job.

Reinforced Chassis

According to Porsche, the chassis of the 911 Carrera 4S ‘sets the standard’ for sports cars. It is lean and perfectly balanced, with wide front and rear tracks. Also, thanks to its all-wheel-drive system, it also has front and rear differentials. Delta4X4 intends to fully rebuild the car’s chassis to give it the rigidity it requires for serious off-road duty, so the car is likely to lose some of its athleticism. They are likely to incorporate more reinforced steel components in key areas, which may make the chassis heavier. Also, they’ll probably replace the stock differentials with more robust ones.

New Off-road Suspension

According to Delta4X4, the project car is expected to have an elevated ground clearance of 250 mm (9.8 inches) once completed. To put that in perspective, the finished project car will stand slightly taller than a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. This means that the car will get a fully revised suspension setup, probably with top-grade off-road coilovers.

Exterior Enhancements

The 911 Carrera 4S project car is also going to get a set of rally-style, circular lights on its hood. Most recent safari-spec 911s have such rally-style lights; they look great on the 911. The guys at Delta4X4 are also going to give the car flared wheel arches, motorsport wheels, beefier off-road tires, and a fitting expedition roof rack. Also, according to the 3D renderings Delta4X4 provided, the car will also be finished in brilliant white with contrasting black, grey, and yellow racing stripes.

Powertrain Likely to Remain Stock

Delta4X4 has not alluded to any planned revisions of the project car’s powertrain. They are likely to leave it as it is. The 911 Carrera 4S boasts a glorious 443-hp 3.0 L twin-turbocharged flat-6 engine that pairs with a new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. It is capable of propelling the car from zero to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
