The Cayenne Turbo in its Full Potential

The Cayenne is considered one of the best midsize luxury SUVs in the world and given the capabilities of its Turbo and Turbo S E-Hybrid models. It is also among the fastest luxury SUVs on the market. Right from when it debuted in 2002, Porsche showed that the Cayenne was never meant to be your average laid-back luxury SUV. However, it was and still is arguably the best-driving luxury SUV on the market, with serious high-performance potential.

Well, German performance shop Edeltuner HGP decided to test the performance limits of a Cayenne Turbo. They upgraded the engine of a 3rd-generation Cayenne Turbo with their '1000 PS' Stage 2 kit priced at € 24,900 including installation (according to the HGP website), and the SUV came alive. With its increased top speed of 206 mph, the modified HGP Cayenne Turbo even dethroned the Bentley Bentayga Speed—the fastest SUV in the world.

Output of Close to 1,000 hp

The stock 3rd-generation Cayenne Turbo’s engine develops an impressive output of 550 PS (541 hp) and 770 Nm (568 lb.-ft.) of torque. Thanks to HGP’s Stage 2 kit, that output improved to an incredible 962 PS (949 hp) and 1250 Nm (922 lb.-ft.) of torque.

Familiar Territory

HGP specializes in tuning and modifying vehicles made by the VW Group, so this build was right up their alley. Also, a few months back, HGP modified a 2020 RS7 Sportback. The RS7 Sportback’s engine is the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that powers the Cayenne Turbo, only more powerful. Just like they have done with this Cayenne Turbo, HGP gave the RS7 Sportback their Stage 2 performance upgrade, which increased the car’s output to an identical 962 PS (949 hp) and 1250 Nm. (922 lb.-ft.) of torque. Therefore, this was familiar territory for the German performance shop.

The Fastest Cayenne Yet

In stock form, the Cayenne Turbo requires just 3.9 seconds to sprint from zero to 60 mph. With the Sport Chrono Package, this 0-60mph time improves to 3.7 seconds.

YouTuber MotorOli.de got a chance to test the capabilities of the modified HGP Cayenne Turbo on certain unrestricted sections of the Autobahn. Before he started out, he confirmed that the SUV now weighs 2,385 kilograms (5,258 pounds), 125 kg (275 pounds) more than it weighed in stock form. Despite the added weight, he showed that the HGP Cayenne Turbo was going from zero to 62 mph in 3.0 seconds, and from zero to 124 mph (200 km/h) in just 10 seconds. To put this in perspective, the HGP Cayenne Turbo accelerates as fast (or almost as fast) as the BMW M8 Competition or the Ferrari 812 Superfast.

MotorOli.de also hit a top speed of 206 mph (331 km/k) with the HGP Cayenne Turbo, at which point the trees and thickets on both sides of the road were just green blurs. The SUV remained steady and composed even at over 200 mph – a testament to the superior build quality of the Cayenne.

What the Cayenne Turbo Got

HGP’s Stage 2 performance upgrade added larger turbochargers with larger turbine shafts, compressor wheels, and inlets. The engine also got larger-volume intake hoses and a custom intake manifold. HGP also the engine an ECU tune, changed its boost pressure sensors and removed its Vmax limitation.
