The Specimen

The car in question is a 1979 911 SC Targa. The "SC" stands for Super Carrera. The "Targa" is also known as the "safety cabriolet" since the additional pillar/structure provides support to the frame. A Targa car is typically a blend between a convertible and a "T-top". The motor was a 3.0-liter flat-six capable of 180hp. The body was wider than the normal Carrera. It also has notable chrome accents around the body as well as the headlight rings.

Electric Classic Cars

Enter a certain UK based automotive tuning shop. This business specializes in converting classic cars to become EV cars of the future. They are solving an everlasting problem with classic cars - ongoing maintenance and difficulties in finding parts. For some enthusiasts, this is not a problem but more of a challenge to look forward to. Their sell is that you no longer need to be concerned with the smell of fuel, or dealing with upcoming maintenance. Converting your classic gem to an EV platform will essentially be maintenance free. This gives the owner more time/freedom to enjoy the classic car from the comfort of their quiet cabin.

Restoration

When the car first arrived at ECC, it was in pretty rough shape. It would require a full restoration before getting integrated with all the EV components. The work included replacing the front bumper and fenders, sanding the car down to the bare metal, and applying a fresh new coat of paint. when all was said and done, the outside shined like a factory-perfect model.

Integration

Undergoing an EV conversion requires a few things. Batteries and electric motors to name a couple of needed items. The battery pack is supplied by today's favorite EV brand: Tesla. It is 54kWh and was split between the front trunk and rear compartment where the original 3.0-liter Flat-six engine first lived. The dual electric motor and Tesla battery combination allow the vehicle to increase the 0-60mph times by 1 second. A single charge gives this Porsche a 200-mile range before needing to recharge.

Benefits

A Porsche purist may read through this and think, that's it? Get rid of the beautiful song of that flat-six to coast in silence and get to my destination just one second quicker? Well, no...there are a few other benefits to consider overall! With older cars, the maintenance schedule is always "ad-hoc". Meaning, at any given moment in time, repairs may become necessary to keep your precious gem gliding around town. Sometimes these repairs are cheap, other times they are not so much. With an EV car, the drive systems are virtually maintenance free. With fluctuating fuel prices, the 200-mile range on a single charge is definitely a benefit. Lastly, with the motor now gone, the vehicle gains a full trunk again so hello road trips!
