"Eroded Porsche" Is a Cool Futuristic Piece of Art

We like to think of Porsche vehicles as pieces of art, but this 911 sculpture actually qualifies as such.

Real Art

We often like to think that Porsche vehicles themselves are basically pieces of functional art. But the 911 you see before you actually is a piece of rather high art, albeit not functional. Designed by Daniel Arsham, "Eroded Porsche" is actually going up for grabs, too, at the Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art and Design Day Sale, taking place June 9 at the JW Marriott in Hong Kong.

Fate of Humanity

This Porsche is just another piece in a line of artwork created by Arsham exploring the artist's vision of what the fate of humanity might look like. "Arsham re-imagines everyday objects as artifacts unearthed in a futuristic geological dig, years of material damage from the elements captured in ghostly, intricately crystalized erosions," Phillips said of the piece in a release.

Childhood Dream

To date, Arsham has explored this interesting concept through collaborations with a variety of big-name companies, including Rimowa, Dior, Adidas, Pokémon, and Uniqlo. But he was particularly interested in partnering with Porsche, a brand he's loved since childhood.

From the Future

"Designed with volcanic ash, Arsham re-imagines the car as a witness to one of the most devastating kinds of natural disasters, its ashy grey body abruptly gouged and delicately encrusted with his signature crystal erosions," Phillips said. "Enigmatic and ever-compelling, Arsham’s practice continues to explore dichotomies between reality and fiction, as well as destruction and creation in his apocalyptic world of the future.”

Public Debut

"Eroded Porsche" made its public debut at the London Opera House in Hong Kong back on April 30 as part of a special display alongside Arsham’s other pieces from his future relics series. The exhibition was organized by Phillips and K11 MUSEA, which is considered to be Hong Kong’s Silicon Valley of Culture.

Art on Art

Though we obviously hope that Arsham’s vision never comes to fruition, we can't deny that his artwork is absolutely fascinating. Especially when his post-apocalyptic treatment is applied to one of the most iconic and artful car models ever conceived, of course.
