A modern slant nose 935

When Porsche revealed its retro-perfect 935 homage race car, it wowed followers of the brand all over the world. But what would it look like on a circuit, at speed? After baiting Porsche fans with images of the new 935 in a studio, the longtail racer has was send on a global awareness tour.

Proving its merit on a great track

At Laguna Seca, the 935 made a huge impression during Porsche’s Rennsport event. The challenging Californian circuit was a perfect foil for this new Porsche racing car’s abilities. Even through the challenging corkscrew, the 935 was perfectly poised and showed that it was to be a true Porsche competition car.

Lighting up the Goodwood festival

Across the Atlantic, at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed event, the 935 wowed British enthusiasts too. On the forested Hillclimb run which is the showpiece of this event, the 935 could show its new LED lights, which are hidden in the front bumper corners. It is a 911 underneath

This longtail race car might carry the legacy of 935, but it is, in fact, a 911 underneath. Porsche used the 911 GT2 as a platform and the extended the rear bodywork to achieve a shape that is relatable to the legendary 1970s 935. The result is a car that looks fantastic and authentic. And that added length does aid aerodynamics a great deal, increasing this Porsche’s high-speed stability.

It is all business in the back

Viewed from the rear, there is a huge fixed wing which dominates this 935’s structure. To help balance the downforce properties from that rear wing is a complicated lower bumper shape, which is framed by a diffuser. This allows this new 935 to optimize airflow around the rear of the car, generating a lot of downforce on track and increasing cornering speeds by boosting grip.

A modern classic in the making

Ensuring that this 935 has more than enough power to tally competitive lap times, is a very powerful Porsche engine. The 3.8-liter flat-six powerplant produces 700hp. In a car that weighs only 3042 pounds, performance is tremendous. A seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission sends all that power to the rear wheels. And if you are wondering about the symbolism of that number 70 on the door, it indicates that this 935 project was part of the Porsche brand’s 70th-anniversary celebrations.

Completing the legacy

And this is where the inspiration for this new 935 comes from. The car shown with it is the classic Porsche Moby Dick racer, which dates from 1977. Porsche’s design team faithfully interpreted the original car with this new 935. Even the Martini livery was perfectly recreated to complement the new 935’s larger shape and more aerodynamic proportions.
