Stunning and Rare

Porsche fans already know that early 911 S models aren't terribly common cars. This beautiful Tangerine example - a 1972 model up for grabs at RM Sotheby's - is no exception, as it's one of just 1,750 S coupes produced in that particular model year. It's also a numbers-matching, fully restored beauty that has a lot going for it, and the asking price to match.

Mysterious Origins

This particular car was delivered new by an official Porsche dealer called Raffay in Hamburg, Germany. After that, not much is known about the Porsche, at least pertaining to its early years. The car made its way to Sweden in 1984, but was never registered there nor apparently driven, and was eventually sold and taken apart by an owner who intended to modify the 911.

Perfect Candidate

That thankfully never happened, and the classic 911 essentially just sat around until 2006, when the current owner took possession of it. That person also happens to be a restorer of Porsches, and this one made the perfect candidate for that treatment, as it had never been in an accident and had zero rust to contend with.

To the Core

The car was stripped down to its core and refinished in the original Tangerine hue, while the black interior received an overhaul as well. There, the "pepita" seat inserts provide a nice bit of contrast, while the 911 S also sports a factory sunroof for a bit of wind in the hair driving on nice days.

Better than New

The original drivetrain was then given a total overhaul, like the rest of the car, both cosmetically and mechanically speaking. Today, this classic 911 S is in simply amazing condition, inside, out, and underneath, looking arguably better than it ever has, even when new.

Model Year Changes

It's also notable that 1972 brought about a round of changes to Porsche's then-established sports car, including a larger 2.4-liter displacement for its iconic flat-six powerplant, as well as the addition of Bosch mechanical fuel injection, which helped it produce 190 horsepower.

Worth the Price

Now finished, this beautiful example of an earlier 911 S is up for grabs with a significant price tag of 219,000 euros, or around $260,000. That's a lot of coin, but in this case, very much deserved for a car that's rare, stunning, and correct.
