Porsche factory racer Romain Dumas might actually be better at elevation than he is at Le Mans.

1. Pike's Peak Hillclimb Dominance

Porsche factory driver Romain Dumas' motorsports success is well known at legendary places like Le Mans. But his other racing efforts don't get quite as much press. And we think that's a shame. Take Pike's Peak, for example. This year, Dumas scored his third victory at the iconic race in the last four years. And his latest, impressive PPIHC title came in spite of a little engine trouble.

2. A True Dual Threat

In 2016, Dumas pulled off the amazing feat of winning both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. And he did it with just a week in between the two. Dumas didn't get another shot at Le Mans for Porsche this year, but did race a prototype Signatech Alpine LMP2, finishing 10th overall and 8th in class. That somewhat disappointing finish didn't stop him from once again dominating PPIHC, however.

3. The Right Tool for the Job

Once again, Dumas claimed victory at Pike's Peak with his lightweight Norma-Honda. Dumas and his team have been continuously improving the car over the last several years, and the results of their hard work obviously speak for themselves. But Dumas faced a little engine trouble this year along the way, which probably cost him a shot at a record time.

4. Shooting for the Record

Yes, amazingly enough, winning Pikes Peak three out of the last four years just isn't enough for the talented Dumas. His goal was to break the current record, which stands at 8:13:08, set back in 2013 by Sebastien Loeb in a very expensive Peugeot factory team effort. Despite winning the race, Dumas didn't really come close, notching a time of 9:05.

5. Money Isn't Everything

But what we love most about Dumas and his Pikes Peak efforts is the fact that he's overcome budgetary restrictions to notch incredible success. His team is comprised of nothing but volunteers, which is a stark contrast to the multi-million race teams he's surrounded by. It's a testament to not only his team but also an indication of just how good a driver this Porsche factory racer really is. No matter what kind of surface he's racing on.
