New GT3

The newest Porsche 911 GT3 has arrived. The 992 generation of the track-focused Porsche is an improvement upon its predecessor in almost every way. And the best part about it is that they didn't feel the need to reinvent the wheel. The philosophy behind the unbeatable driving dynamics and track performance of the 991.2 is still there with the newest GT3.

Power and Weight

Interestingly, when you look at the power and torque specifications, the 992 GT3 only slightly edges out its predecessor. The naturally aspirated 4.0-liter boxer engine powering the new GT3 is reportedly almost identical to that in the GT3 Cup car. The flat-6 is capable of producing 502 horsepower and 364 lb-ft of torque. And despite an increase in the car's physical dimensions, Porsche claims the weight is practically unchanged from the previous generation of the GT3.

Suspension

So if the power and weight are the same, then what makes this GT3 17 seconds faster than the previous one around the Nordschleife? Well, let's start with the suspension.

The new GT3 has a unique, exclusively-designed suspension setup. At the front, there is a double-wishbone setup that is very similar to that used in the 911 RSR race car. The multi-link concept at the rear remains, but with more ball joints for added strength.

Wider Tires

All four tires are wider by 10 mm. And with a front track that is 1.9 inches wider, there will be no shortage of mechanical grip. Customers will have the option to equip their GT3 with the same track/street tires that the sub-7-minute Nurbirgring time was recorded with.

Better Brakes

The standard brakes with the new GT3 are cast iron disks at each corner. The front brakes feature 16-inch disks, which is an inch wider than the previous GT3's. The option of a carbon-ceramic brake set is also available, which helps significantly reduce unsprung mass. Those familiar with racing dynamics know just how crucial that area of weight-saving can be.

Improved Aerodynmics

So much downforce! The active suspension of the 992 GT3 allows the driver to set the car up for track use by adjusting the front lip spoiler, the diffusor, and the rear wing. This track mode setup produces so much extra downforce that Porsche had to put out a warning to drivers not to use it except when on a race track. The swan neck rear wing design is a huge improvement on previous versions of the car, producing a lot more desired airflow due to having an uninterrupted bottom-facing surface.

Evolution of the GT3

The 8-speed PDK is standard, with the addition of a stick shifter, for those uncomfortable with shifting gears from the back of their steering wheel. And a 6-speed manual option is, of course, available for us purists out there. Undeniably faster in a straight line, the PDK can help launch the GT3 from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. We eagerly await the release of pricing information for the new GT3. But it's probably a safe guess that these cars will reach the $150,000 mark very easily.
