Is Porsche 911 Speedster is a Proper Send-Off for the 991?

All hail the Speedster

Thanks to the good folks at Porsche Motorsport, we will be receiving a new Speedster in about a year. And by we I mean a super limited group of folks with enough money to light cigars with an undeserving Benjamin Franklin. 

It's pretty limited

Only 1,948 of these new Speedsters will be produced and will have a sticker price of $275,750, with a delivery fee of $1,250. The model will be a variant of the 991 Carrera 4 Cabrio but weighing 200 lbs less. That weight deficit stems from liberal use of lightweight carbon fiber on the hood, signature twin-hoop rear deck, and front fenders.

Cutting away the excess

The front and rear fascia of the car are both made from polyurethane and the roof will need to be manually operated to save further weight. With all of the weight-cutting Porsche has done, the Speedster comes in at just 100 pounds more than a fixed-roof GT3.

Taking inspiration

Speaking of the GT3, The new Speedster uses the same NA 4.0-liter flat-six from the 911 GT3 and GT3 RS. The suspension is also tuned to that of the GT3. However, the Speedster will have unique tweaks to account for the rear-wheel-drive setup.

Can we please have one?

That flat-six engine makes 502 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque, with a high revving 9,000-rpm redline. The power unit has individual throttle bodies for improved reactions and is mated to a GT Sport six-speed manual transmission. It'll do 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, before sprinting to a top speed of 192 mph.

Further weight savings

The weight reduction on the Speedster continues on inside of the car with reduced weight door panels equipped with woven door pulls and storage nets.

Bonus prize

A nice bonus that Porsche is providing for customers lucky enough to get their hands on a Speedster, is an exclusive timepiece. A nice Porsche Design Speedster wristwatch that features a carbon fiber dial and a rotor inspired by the center lock wheel on the Speedster. The band on the watch is made from the very same leather that adorns the interior of the Speedster. We couldn't think of a better send-off for the ultra-popular 991 than a salute to Porsche's legendary history.
