Better Choice?

There was a time, not too long ago, when choosing a Porsche was easy - it was 911 or nothing, at least for us enthusiasts. But then along came the Cayman and Boxster, and they just kept getting better and better. Now, as the 911 continues to get bigger and more luxurious, the Cayman continues to provide an amazing driving experience in a smaller and cheaper package. And that has culminated with this amazing machine - the Cayman GTS 4.0.

Trickling Down

Things got off to a bit of a rough start with the 718 when it launched with a four-cylinder engine. But enthusiasts weren't fans of the way that powerplant sounded, demanding a return of flat-six power to the platform. Porsche eventually obliged with the Cayman GT4, and then wound up bringing a slightly detuned version of its naturally-aspirated masterpiece to the GTS in 2020.

Packed With Goodies

That combination is a magical one, as the GTS 4.0 adds a proper powerplant to what was already a fantastic chassis, with an optimal mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. This model also comes packed with goodies like PASM Sport Suspension, Sport Chrono, Porsche Torque Vectoring, a sport exhaust, and a six-speed manual with the 911 GT3's dual-mass flywheel.

Satisfying Drive

All of that adds up to one heck of a fun car to drive. The flat-six provides 394 horsepower, peaking out at 7,800 rpm with max torque coming in at 5,000 rpm. It's more than enough for regular road use, and there's just something satisfying about a naturally aspirated powerplant when compared to today's modern, peaky turbocharged mills.

Best of the Best

While you're listening to the glorious sounds emitted from the car's powerplant, you'll also be rewarded with some of the best handling of any new vehicle on the market today. The Cayman GTS 4.0 has everything a true driver is looking for - tremendous feedback, flawless steering, and the feeling that one is directly connected to the road at all times.

Well Rounded

What's particularly nice about the Cayman GTS 4.0 is that you don't give up much to enjoy that sort of performance - it still rides fairly well on bad roads, it isn't intimidating by any means, and these cars are known to be quite reliable. It behaves well in normal driving situations, unlike many other high-performing sports cars out there in the world.

Bang for the Buck

With a starting price of $87,400, the Cayman GTS 4.0 is also a great value when compared to what you'd have to spend to get behind the wheel of a naturally-aspirated, 4.0-liter 911 - the GT3, which costs nearly twice as much. Obviously, the GT3 has a lot more gear and prominence, but for those that simply care about the drive, the GTS 4.0 is clearly the best Porsche currently available for the price.
