Luftgekühlt Great Britain: Air-Cooled Porsches in England
Daily Slideshow: The United States isn't the only country chock full of incredible air-cooled Porsches.
Air-Cooled Magic
By now, most of us are well aware of Luftgekühlt, the air-cooled Porsche tribute events dreamed up by Patrick Long and Howie Idelson. But what you may not know is that these incredible meets don't just take place within the sunny, dry confines of California. In fact, England put on their own Luftgekühlt recently, and Automobile was there to capture all the magic on film.
Wet, Gloomy, but Awesome
As you might have guessed, the weather wasn't exactly agreeable. In fact, it was pretty much typical British weather - wet and gloomy. But that certainly didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the participants or the attendees.
Amazing Collection
And how could they, with such an incredible collection of Porsches to gawk at? Automobile's resident photographer certainly came away slack-jawed, by the sounds of things. "Never before have I seen so much vintage, rare, and expensive Porsche history in one place," he noted.
Air-Cooled Only
This might have been the inaugural British Luftgekühlt, but you wouldn't know it by the incredible machines in attendance. Heck, even the parking lot was chock full of modern GT3s and other water-cooled creations banned from entering this air-cooled-only event.
Special Offerings
There were pre-A 356s and early 90s 993s, of course. But there was also a very special orange 934 race car decked out in Jägermeister livery. Not to mention a giant circle of '60s 911s, all of them in perfect Concours condition.
Something for Everyone
On the other hand, there were also plenty of unrestored rides and barn finds, if you're more into drivers than show queens. Truly a little something for everyone. And hey, that's the kind of condition you'd expect to see an old English Porsche in, right?
Singular Celebration
Among the many fascinating machines, the photog's favorites were a Singer DLS and 1964 904 GTS. This sums up what Luftgekühlt Great Britain was all about. The goal here is to celebrate all things air-cooled, whether it's a slice of Porsche history or a modern interpretation of those classics.
