Modernized Porsche 928 Rendering Gets It Right

Porsche isn't likely to ever bring back the 928, but if it did, we hope it looks like this.

Proper Return

While the Porsche 928 doesn't net the same appreciation from enthusiasts as the 911 these days, it was still a good looking and fun-to-drive machine. It was also a solid seller, one that helped propel Porsche to an entirely new level in the American market by the mid-'80s. Today, it's hard to imagine Porsche bothering to bring the 928 back, however, but if it did, we hope it looks something like these renderings from SP Design.

Perfectly Modern

In all its years of production, Porsche never really bothered to update the 928's styling. But today, long after its demise, many have suggested that we might see a new version eventually. Those rumors have never panned out, but these modernized versions of the older model look exactly like what we imagine a new 928 would look like.

Familiar Cues

The designer used stock photos of a 992 911 as the basis for this redesign, then massaged the whole thing into the familiar shape of a 928. That means the traditional round headlights up front, which are mounted up higher and presumably pop up and forward like the originals.

Different Rear

The rear looks a lot less like the very unique original's, but you can tell the designer did their best to implement some of those unique styling cues. The most notable thing here is the absence of the long light bar that's present on the 911 and pretty much every other modern Porsche vehicle.

Unmistakable Side Profile

The side profile is unmistakably 928, however, particularly the roofline that slopes back and is punctured by a pair of triangular-shaped windows. Personally, we dig the look a lot, as it combines the best of the latest 911 with the unique styling of the 928 that we still appreciate today.

Market Potential

When Porsche originally rolled out the 928, it was an attempt to appeal to a more traditional American buyer, one who appreciated a front-wheel-drive, V8-powered sports car. So the question is, as popular as the 911 and various exotics with mid-engine layouts have become, would such a thing make it in today's market?

Distant Possiblity

Personally, we think that a new 928 would stand a chance, but who knows? Porsche seems content to continue evolving the 911, and the 718 family has carved out a niche in the lineup as well. Otherwise, it's all about EVs and SUVs. That formula seems to be working quite well, so the possibility of a new 928 seems rather distant.
