The origin story

Back in 1993 Porsche wanted to take part in the BPR Global GT series, but to join they needed a street legal version of the car they wanted to press into service. On hand they had the 993 series 911 which was the first fully new series since 1963. Porsche went to work and built 194 of these street legal models that became known as the 993 GT2. However, the rules of the GT2 class banned cars with all-wheel-drive so the driveshaft and front differential had to be removed from the Porsche.

The DNA of a track star

Loss of the all-wheel drive made these cars a handful to maneuver about especially with all the power under the hatch. While the loss of the driveshaft and front differential cut out some weight from the car, which Porsche loves to do, they went even further and removed every bit of insulation and creature comforts from the car. The GT2 also had aluminum doors and a boot lid to cut out excess pounds. As a result, the car tipped the scales at a lightweight 2,450 lbs.

Drive at your own peril

Two large turbos were then fitted to the car as well as a bigger intercooler that would dwarf some house pets. A secondary oil cooler was added to help keep the engine heat manageable under the brutal feat of endurance racing. The race version could do 480 horsepower but the street legal version was detuned to 430 on pump gas. The 3.6-liter flat six has a top speed of 187 mph and had the infamous nickname of the "widow maker" due to all that power going straight to the rear wheels.

Tell the folks what they'll get

The exterior of the car was the recipient of wider GRP arches, a larger front air dam, and a huge adjustable rear wing that had openings on the either side to feed air to the motor. This car includes racing bucket seats, yellow seat belts, and black leather interior. While racers had more important things to do than to enjoy the radio, you'll get a nice AM/FM tape deck and useful power steering.
