Daily Slideshow: New GT3 RS Debuts at Geneva Motor Show

The 2019 Porsche GT3 RS is the most hardcore iteration of 911's to wear the GT3 badge. So what's new?

Engine

This is the most potent version of the famous naturally-aspirated 4.0 L flat-six to ever be put in a 911. It makes a stomping 520 horsepower as well as 346 torques; that is a 20 horsepower bump and a 7 lb-ft increase over the last, super-fast GT3 RS. It manages all that extra grunt by having a bigger crankshaft, "plasma-coated cylinder liners", and other stuff which isn't very interesting. All you have to know is that it's leaner, meaner, and in this case, GREENER!

Weight

It wouldn't be an RS model without some pounds frugally taken off and this 2019 model is no exception. Sure, this new model isn't much lighter than the last RS, but every bit counts. The roof is still magnesium, the front trunk (frunk) is all carbon fiber (as well as practically everything else), and other weight-saving techniques from the even more hardcore, GT2 RS.

Gearbox

The (normal) GT3 can be specced with a manual transmission. This GT3 RS, unfortunately, is not offered with the same three-pedal layout. The RS is intended for track use, and the fastest way around a track is with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Porsche's notoriously-speedy dual clutch is called "Porsche Doppelkupplung" or "PDK" for short. It is a seven-speed that has been tuned to handle the extra power increase over the last model. Some say that the PDK is the fastest shifting dual-clutch in the business, and it just got faster!

Aerodynamics

The aero on this GT3 RS may seem identical to the last model but Porsche has been very sneaky. Each duct has been maximized for the best airflow to give this GT3 the lowest drag coefficient possible. The wing and diffuser add significantly more downforce at high speeds compared to the last model. Porsche claims that the 2019 RS produces twice...yes twice as much downforce as its little brother the GT3. The NACA vents in the hood, which help to cool the brakes, were taken right off the GT2.

Chassis

The GT3 RS is known to have one of the best handling chassis in the game. This 2019 model improves that statement still, with better springs and ball joints. That in conjunction with the latest version of the rear-wheel steering system and sticker tires all around (265/35 sections front, 325/30 rear) make this GT3 RS a serious track weapon.

Options

What kind of Porsche doesn't have a colossal options list? Well, the GT3 RS basically has every performance option already specced such as performance suspension, exhaust, aero, etc. But that hasn't stopped Porsche from allowing its customers to tick two more expensive boxes. The $18,000 Weissach package adds carbon fiber everything from the roof, to roll bars, to paddle shifters--all which add up to a 13 pounds in weight saving! The other option is for the $13,000 magnesium wheels which save 25 pounds total. These options add up to a monumental $31,000, or the price of a new, heavily-specced Audi A4...

Speed

All of this jibber jabber and no performance figures? Well, the intense attention to detail and obsessive weight saving methods allow the 2019 GT3 RS to hit a top speed of 193 miles per hour. The 0-60 sprint is dealt with in a head-smashing 3.2 seconds. Overall, the GT3 RS is a phenomenal package and costs just $188,550 with no options added. The equivalent Ferrari or Lamborghini cost nearly double and neither can deliver the thrills that this Hulk can. Is this possibly one the best "track bargains" of the decade?
