Photo Op

The Porsche 911 Turbo S has long been known for its incredible performance, which includes some seriously impressive off-the-line acceleration. The latest version is perhaps the most impressive to date, however, with 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque on tap that's good enough to propel the car from 0-60 in just 2.2 seconds. To show off the Turbo S's prowess, Porsche recently took over the Sydney, Australia airport runway for a few test runs, which made for a very cool photo op.

Stretching Its Legs

Now is a good time to do so, of course, since 97 percent of the airport's passenger traffic has been shut down because of COVID-19. Thus, the essentially deserted airport was put to good use as 48 different VIPs were allowed to take a spin in a Turbo S and stretch its legs on the tarmac.

Under Supervision

A group of Porsche Track Experience instructors were on hand to make sure nothing went horribly wrong. That group included Bathurst 1000 champion Luke Youlden, who kept a close eye on everyone as they tested out the launch control of the Turbo S, as well as its tweaked all-wheel-drive system, pushing the car's limits on the 1.3-mile stretch of an airport runway.

Ludicrous Speed

The newest Porsche 911 Turbo S is capable of reaching 205 miles-per-hour with enough space, and in this demonstration, one of them hit 186 mph while pulling 1.3 g on the just-over-one-mile stretch of pavement. That's seriously impressive, obviously, and proves that the Turbo S doesn't need much room to hit ludicrous speeds.

Careful Planning

This unique event took quite a bit of careful planning to pull off, as one might imagine. "There were numerous site visits before we could all agree it was actually possible. Logistically there are so many things to consider: first and foremost, safety," said Belinda Coen, Marketing and Events Manager of Porsche Centre Sydney South.

Once in a Lifetime

"A lot of work went into understanding the length of the runway and the speeds that the vehicle would be able to get to," Coen added. "From there we worked backward so that we had every situation covered. It was such a unique and special event and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that is unlikely to be able to take place ever again."

Cool Stunt

Regardless of that somber fact, we're certainly glad that Porsche was able to pull off this cool stunt. They also filmed the entire thing and made a short video with the highlights, which can be viewed here. However, we must say that after watching it, we're more than a little jealous of the folks that were able to participate.
