Obsessively-Detailed Spyder Recreation Packs WRX Power

Beautiful Controversy

The great thing about recreations of rare and iconic cars like the Porsche 550 Spyder is that you can do whatever you want to them without having to worry about messing up an original copy. And trust us when we say that this particular repop, put together by Los Angeles-based automotive artist and car builder S Klub, has been treated to some pretty wild and controversial mods. But on the flip side, it's actually a pretty incredible, highly-detailed build worth taking a closer look at.

Interesting Choice

This particular car was built specifically to show off at last year's SEMA show but has since been put up for sale. Aside from its unique appearance, it's actually what powers the Porsche that's sure to get people revved up - a Japanese-spec Subaru 2.0-liter EJ207 flat-four engine sourced from a 2002–2005 WRX STI. It's an interesting choice, for sure, and undoubtedly one that should make this Spyder quite quick.

Reliable Combo

The engine is far from stock and has been treated to a Haltech engine management system, custom iWire wiring, Wisecraft titanium intercooler and turbo piping, and a Garrett GTX2860R Gen II Turbocharger kit. The smallish turbo helps reduce lag and boost kicks in at a low 1,500 rpm. On E85, the mill produces a stout 370 horsepower. And according to S Klub, it's proven to be a very reliable combination so far.

Finely Detailed

Once you get past the engine choice, the rest of this Spyder recreation is nothing short of an amazingly detailed work of art. The interior, for example, looks like something crafted by a fine tailor. A mixture of diamond-stitched leather and retro fabric covers pretty much every surface, and that's just the beginning.

Polished Jewel

Just a few of the many notable details here include a series of stopwatches on the dashboard, the tartan-covered radiator, the custom shift knob, one-off Budnik steering wheel, and some amazing riveted copper trim. It's pretty clear that S Klub sunk a ton of money and time into making this Spyder a true polished jewel.

Mission Accomplished

The whole thing is perfectly capped off with a gorgeous retro-looking paint job and a set of HRE wheels wrapped in Toyo rubber. Thoroughly modern yet filled with retro styling touches, this Porsche recreation certainly lives up to its outlaw description. And even though it's obviously going to raise a few eyebrows, that's exactly what S Klub wanted when it build this thing in the first place.
