One-of-Ten 996 911 GT2 Goes for Big Bucks at Auction
This incredibly rare 996 GT2 attracted a ton of interest when it crossed the auction block recently.
Big Money
While the 996 generation of Porsche's beloved 911 is the least popular of them all, that doesn't mean there aren't rare, desirable, and valuable models from this lot. In fact, this incredibly rare 2003 Porsche 911 GT2 is one of just 10 built in total, and one of only three in the U.S. And that's a big part of the reason why it garnered an impressive $227,700 when it crossed the block at Barrett-Jackson's inaugural Houston auction.

Lower Miles
What's impressive about that selling price is the fact that this isn't some ultra low-mile car that's been stashed away and never driven, either. Rather, it has a still-low 19,536 miles on the clock, which means that it's been enjoyed at least a little bit over the last 18 years, anyway. But that's a good thing when it comes to high-performance vehicles in our opinion.

More Special
Of course, the GT2 is far more special than the average, run of the mill 996 911 that routinely sells for a bargain-basement price. This was the very first production car to come with carbon-ceramic brakes as standard equipment, along with a host of other unique equipment. In total, Porsche built 1,287 996 GT2s, but only 10 in this particular shade, dubbed Carrara White.

Impressive Performance
The most notable piece of equipment lies under the hood - Porsche's twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-six, which in this guise produces 476 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox, performance is impressive even by today's standards - 0-60 takes just 3.9 seconds, while the 996 GT2 can reach speeds of 198 miles per hour.

Distinguishing Features
This particular GT2 rolls on a set of 18-inch Turbo-style wheels painted a matching white, as well as yellow brake calipers for some contrast. The GT2 is easily distinguished by its unique bodywork, including that giant rear wing and revised front bumper with a big lip and large air intakes.

Old School Experience
The 996 GT2's racing pedigree is evident, with goodies like a dry-sump oiling system and the distinct lack of electronic nannies like traction control. Power goes exclusively to the rear wheels, which can be a challenge for some, but personally, we welcome that sort of thing.

Bargain Buy?
As far as 996-gen 911s go, they simply don't get much better than the GT2. With loads of power on tap and a fantastic chassis ready to put it to the ground, these cars are equally adept at going fast in a straight line and when the road gets curvy. Thus, this one seems to represent a bit of a bargain, especially in today's crazy market.
