2. 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS

In 1973, Porsche introduced the 911 Carrera RS, which is one of the most valuable 911s on the classic car market. It is considered to be one of the best looking, best handling of the early air cooled cars, and they didn't make that many of them. RS stands for Rennsport, German for Race Sport, and RS models were sold as production race cars. Even now a 911 with an RS logo means business.

3. Engine and Performance

The 1973 Carrera RS featured a 2.7-liter engine, which produced 210-horsepower, which doesn't seem like much now, but was a lot at the time especially considering the curb weight. The RS featured stiffer suspension compared to the regular 911, which delivered extremely good handling, as well as a ducktail spoiler for better cooling and downforce, bigger brakes, and wider rear fenders to cover the wider wheels.

4. Lightweight

The Porsche 911 RS came in two trim levels, Touring or Sport, but neither of them was very heavy. In the Touring version, the RS weighed 2,370 pounds and had was slightly better as a street car. The Sport version was 220 pounds lighter using thinner-gauge steel for the body, and thinner glass. Only a few over 1,000 Sport versions were made, however, Porsche only needed to produce 500 to qualify for the FIA Group 4 Class.

5. Features

The 1973 Porsche Carrera RS comes with leather interior uphonstery, a sunroof, and a Blaupunkt radio, but that is pretty much it. Other than these basic features, the interior is stripped down to reduce the weight, even the rear package shelf trim is gone.

5. Value

According to Hagerty's valuation tool, a 1973 Porsche Carrera RS as a fair value of $530,000, a good value of $625,000, an excellent value of $730,000, and a condition 1 value of $895,000. So don't think you are going to stumble across a '73 Porsche RS at a junk yard, or in a barn, in the near future.
