Going Home

With the exception of those purchased and kept in their home country, most Porsche vehicles are shipped to their new destination, never returning home again. And that's kind of sad, really. What better place to experience a Porsche than on the roads it was developed on, after all? And that was exactly the motivation behind Matt Hummel and his quest to take his Porsche 356 on an epic road trip that he (and it) would never forget.

Long Journey

After devising a dream roadmap, Hummel set about completing the most difficult part of this mission - shipping his vintage Porsche from San Francisco to the French port of Le Havre. But the problems bound to arise from such a journey don't deter Hummel, a man who's become famous for finding beaten up old 356s and driving them across any and all kinds of terrain.

It's About the Experience

Hummel is, in fact, the antithesis of what we've come to expect from the average Porsche fanatic these days. "I want to inspire people to go on adventures with their Porsche," he explained. "For me, visual perfection is not what matters – it’s the driving experience itself. You’re not automatically cool just because you have a Porsche. It’s about what you experience with your Porsche."

Flat 4 Devotees

The first leg of this epic journey began with a trip from Le Havre to Paris, where Hummel was invited to the Le Mans Classic venture known as the "Original Flat4 Drivers Club." There he was joined by all different sorts of 356 models, along with some rare and vintage Volkswagen machines.

Special Surprise

Hummel is also lucky enough to be at Le Mans when another incredible event is taking place - the Porsche Classic Race Le Mans. The lineup consists of nothing but historic Zuffenhausen models, 81 amazing cars there to celebrate Porsche's 70th Anniversary in style.

Historic Stops

But Hummel couldn't stick around for the entire race, because he was keen to get to Germany via Freiburg and then on to Stuttgart. He stopped in Freiburg to witness the site of Porsche's historic hill climb victory in 1957, where Hummel, of course, had to give it a go in his 356.

Red Carpet Visit

Hummel rolled into Stuttgart the very next day, but he couldn't have possibly expected what came next. Porsche chairmen Oliver Berg and Bernd Stadler alerted the folks at the Porsche Museum that a very special guest was in town, so they obviously rolled out the red carpet for him.

Open Archives

When Hummel arrived at the museum, he was stunned to find out that Porsche was opening up its historic archive just for him. There he got to soak in the countless artifacts on display in that special part of the museum, including old racing posters, historical documents, personal letters, and vehicle papers from sports cars presumed long lost.

Inspiration

It was a fitting end to an amazing journey, one that any Porsche fan would obviously love to take. And even better, we're betting that Hummel's trip inspires at least a handful of us to do exactly the same thing!
