Notable Details

It's been an awfully long time now since we first heard rumors that Porsche was going to build an even more hardcore GT4 RS version of its already hardcore GT4 718. And in that time span, we've heard quite a few additional rumors as to what we can expect from this special car, which is supposedly set to debut sometime later in 2020. But after CarScoops spotted a mule doing some cold weather testing in northern Europe recently, a few notable features presented themselves.

Race-Inspired Touch

The first and perhaps most obvious new detail on the GT4 RS test mule is something we've never seen on a Cayman before - centerlock wheels, which were not present on the last test mule spotted at the Nurburgring back in September. That alone should be music to the ears of Porsche enthusiasts, especially 911 fans that appreciate this race-inspired touch.

Big or Small

The previous GT4 RS test mule also wore a pretty massive GT3-sourced rear wing, but this newer version sports a smaller piece that came straight from the regular GT4. There's no telling which one might make it to the production version, but the smart money would be on the smaller wing.

Frigid Testing

Another noticeable change is that engineers covered up the NACA front hood ducts with tape on this particular mule. CarScoops reckons they did this to keep snow from entering the cooling system, and because the extra cooling just wasn't needed during this frigid bit of testing.

Keep Your Cool

Astute viewers will also notice the louvers present behind the side windows, which are also likely there to aid in cooling the mid-mounted 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six engine. Which leads up to our next big question about this "hotter" GT4: how much power will it produce?

Power Moves

The regular GT4 makes 414 horsepower, so we know that the RS will offer at least a little more than that. CarScoops guesses that output will land at 444 hp, which would give it a nice boost without threatening the upcoming 911 GT3. The other big news here is that the GT4 RS is rumored to come with only Porsche's PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, which would also help differentiate it from the manual-only GT4.

Perfect Fit

Those seeking the ultimate in 718 performance will undoubtedly be thrilled to get their hands on the new GT4 RS. The regular GT4 is already a highly capable and enjoyable machine, especially for purists. But if you're seeking something a bit faster and don't want to step up to a 911 just yet, the RS seems like the perfect fit.
