Narrowing Down

Rare is a subjective word. For some, the production of a few thousand vehicles might justify the term. But this 1993 Porsche 911 RS America that recently crossed the virtual block at Mecum Auctions is one of just 701 produced for the U.S. and Canada, and the numbers even dwindle down much further than that.

Fly on a Wall

This particular Porsche is also finished in color-to-sample Ferrari Fly Yellow, one of just four produced in this retina-blazing color. And over the last 20+ years, it's been maintained meticulously.

Good Life

Living its life in California, this 911 has never seen a drop of rain or snow. For most of its life, it remained under the care of the registrar of the PCA RS America Registry and PCA Region Chief Driving Instructor.

Midas Touch

Despite that, this car was never raced or used on a track at all. Now that might seem like a shame to most, but it's certainly kept this car in immaculate shape. It's so nice, in fact, that it's been on display at the Rennsport Reunion IV, V and VI at Laguna Seca.

Simplistic Beauty

The beauty of the RS America, of course, is what it didn't come with. And that's "unnecessary" things like power steering, sound insulation, armrests, and a rear seat.

Powertrain Perfection

What it does have, and what you really need, is that glorious 3.6-liter flat-six producing 247 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. Rounding out this tasty package is a proper 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.

Ready For Duty

Bilstein PSS10 adjustable shocks would certainly help matters if this Porsche ever hit the track, as its maker intended. And of course, we're always fans of those iconic Cup 1 wheels and that Turbo-style rear spoiler.

Three of Four

It might seem strange in this day and age of endless options, but there were only four boxes to tick on the '93 RS America. This particular car has three of them - the limited-slip differential, electric-sliding sunroof, and climate-control air conditioning.

Rare Options

An additional option, exclusive to Fly Yellow cars, are power-adjustable external rearview mirrors, which this car is obviously equipped with. On the inside, the Porsche also retains its factory original RSA door cards and RSA seats.

Properly Pampered

All of these interesting quirks and features all add up to a very unique 911. So it's really no surprise that this particular car hammered for a substantial $132,000 at auction. Personally, we're just glad that it's been cared for so well over the years, and hope that it lives a similarly pampered life with its new owner!
